Being short like me the bottom storage only way. Just as much room to put too much junk in like a top storage.

Cons I have

To heavy
If pup wont come out I got climb up on tailgate

Pro that outweighs any con to me is I can get to my stuff without a step ladder.

Do you have any problems with your equipment getting wet or stinking?

Box is to small in my opinion dog can’t hardly stand up in the ones I seen and I don’t like a box that sits higher in back of truck but if you like them they are fine just not my preference.

What I have found over the years is equipment kept in the dog box gets the crap beat out of it. No matter what it is. I've had the same owens box that I won for 8 years, when its time to replace it. I will get one without storage. I never use it and it lets the box ride lower in the truck.

Ive had top and bottom both and didnt stay with them for different reasons. My dogs comfort on long trips was more important to me like crossing several states going to Autumn Oaks, Plott days, Winter classic ect. I had Unique company build a custom box that was like 48 by 48 and tall enough for a dog to stand up and turn around easily and fully insulated.I have a small tool box infront of the dog box that holds anything I would put in top or bottom storage. I sure dont have the best dogs but what I got rides as comfortable as I can make it.

Bottom is only way to go w/a lifted truck.

Top storage provides insulation from the sun on the top of the box. Dogs are said to show less aggression if they can not fully stand.

Worst thing about the bottom storage boxes is they sweat. Most say they leak but I have found most don't leak but sweat. I had a guy build me one. Nicest and best built box I have seen, had full 6" deep drawer with removable sides for the summer and 24" tall in the dog compartment. The only hang up was it sweated and would mildew a vest or collars that was left in it for a week or so.

.

Iv got a unique brand bottom storage box for a small truck and I love it no leaks no sweat nothing. Only thing I have a problem with is it don't have much protection from sun in summer time heat

Bottom storage everything is reachable and visible when opened, Dog doesn’t have to crawl in compartment,
Con to bottom storage- price and you really only have 3 choices-Owens, Ol Dry Pond and Seneca

Top Storage-compartment helps with heat
Con-Dog has to crouch to get in and it doesn’t matter how tall you are you will not reach the back of the storage with the tailgate down,

All boxes sweat, they are all pricey, and they all make a good box. You just have to figure out what works best for you function wise and price.

Top/bottom?

A little history on the bottom storage. Back in around 2000 or 2001 I made a custom bottom storage dog box to match my Impact Blue Dodge Ram 1500. It took me a couple months to come up with the design and put it together. Anyhow, I got it finished and attended Autumn Oaks that year. I can't count the people who stopped by and asked where I got the box and what company built it. The next year when I attended AO, some of the bigger companies were making them. They may have had the idea first and it really doesn't matter but I made the first one I ever saw. I've made several sense then, top storage, bottom storage but the one I use now has no storage and is for a small truck and I have taken the doors off. The handiest thing I've ever used. I have a cap on the back of my 04 Tacoma 4 door and when I raise the back lid they can stick their heads out so you can collar them up or leash them without them bailing out on you. Also, I don't make mine too high for the dog to stand. Usually, around 18" inside. I've hulled 80+ lb. hounds in them with no problem. I want mine to lay down when I travel. Standing all the time will ware on a dog. Could you imagine going to a hunt 4/5 hours away and having to stand in a moving vehicle. It's much more important to keep the dog hydrated, cool/warm and comfortable, IMO. I also insulate all the box's I build which helps with sun and cold. Top storage, bottom storage or no storage depends on your likes or dislikes and style of hunting. Get what fits you and your style and go with it. Happy hunting.

When I bought my top storage box the dealer told me to put a thick carpet in the bottom of the storage area to prevent it from sweating. It works, never had a problem with it sweating.

We had ours custom built with side storage, best thing I ever did. When you drive a full size 4x4 and you are only 5'2", top storage is just a waste of space. The only thing different I would do would be to put the storage in the middle instead of on the outside.

I want the dog box for the dogs. I want the toolbox for any equipment that I'm not going to carry inside the truck. I don't like having my rear view obstructed.

I’ve owned both and will never have another aluminum box with storage. Aluminum oxidation covers everything you put in one with black powder. Maybe if it was one of the black coated aluminum boxes it may not do that. I personally never used the storage on either box I had. Keep my Garmin and collars in a bag and sit in backseat till I get home and charge them. Light and gun stays in truck. I just don’t trust putting all that money in a storage compartment that can be unlocked with a key that most people have 12 of. Just sayin. No storage is lighter and easier to load by yourself too
