Dog bite............?

Dogs were handled at tree and tied back. It was hot and they had pretty much quiet barking. One particular dog was tied about 10 yards from the tree and not barking. I walked a couple of feet in front him while moving to the other side. As I did he lunged forward and got my left hand. He got it REAL good too. The hunt ended a couple of minutes later and we headed to the truck. I kept pressure on it and drove nearly 2 hours back home. It continued to bleed. Anyway, I cleaned it out good and wrapped it tight. The next morning it was extremely swollen and looked horrible. Sorta looked like a half lemon size swelling. Started getting concerned and thought my hand was broken. The bite was right behind the knuckle. Emergency room here I come!!!! X-ray didn't show a break but teeth marks scraping the bone. $200 trip, so far. Antibiotics $50. ER was my deductible. I'm sure more bills will trickle in. My dog was found to be eaten up on one side. $75 vet trip. The gentleman that owned the dog was that, a gentleman, throughout the hunt. He said he made an announcement before we cut loose......."don't walk in front of this dog". Well, I didn't get that disclaimer. I clearly heard him say the rattlesnakes were bad in that area. I listen to things that might cause pain. I didn't have his number but I called the hunt director (he knows him well) and asked if he would have the man call me. No response yet after 9 days. My hand is still throbbing!!!!! I guess my question is, should I ask for reimbursement for my expenses? I'm no "puss" and the money ain't gonna break the bank, but I think fair is fair. Your comments won't hurt my feelings. Never had it happen before and just curious what others think. Happy hunting to all and it's getting HOT down here.

Id chalk it up to a learning experience, there are alot of dogs that will grab a stranger under the tree or when tied back. Legally though the guy is probably responsible for your bills.

I got mixed feelings about it. Really there is no excuse for a dog to bite. I have two that are as hard a tree dog as anybody's and you could stick your hand in there mouth and they just stop. Legally he is liable for the dog. Personally I think UKC should have a policy on biting dogs and cant really believe they have not been sued yet.

Personally I would chalk it up to lessened learned.

Thanks guys. It wasn't a UKC hunt but a four letter KC lol. I've gotten probably 30 years of walking to trees and never felt that I have to walk behind every dog at a tree. Especially one tied back and not even barking. John it's definitely got me on my toes.

Posted by dchartt on 05-24-2015 08:28 PM:

dont walk in front of my dog lmao really?

pretty sure id find that man, outside of a nitehunt, and walk on top of him

Posted by DFred on 05-24-2015 09:05 PM:

A warning to not walk in front of this dog sounds like it's happened before. Actually it sounds like a pattern. If this dog were mine it would stop a bullet. What if there would have been a youngster in the cast? To me this isn't acceptable. A gentleman will do as he did. A REAL man would have taken care of the situation before you were bitten.

Posted by AngelOfDeath on 05-24-2015 09:29 PM:

I would send him the bill.
But the first thing I would have done is killed that dog seconds after it bit me.
A dog that bites me dies.I don't care if its my dog your dog or whoever's dog it bites me in less then a minute its dead.
But thats just me

LOL. Good policy AOD

The first competition hunt I ever entered. Before we turned loose a handler told me " do not walk in front of my dog when its treeing or tied back , it will bite the **** out of you ". Hows that for a first hunt ?

Although I think reimbursement would be the sportsman thing to do, I too have mixed feelings about the situation. I kind of feel like there are some associated risks that come with all sports, but especially ours with dogs and dark and nature etc. we don't typically see players with sports injuries expecting reimbursement from the pitcher that hit them with a ball, a linebacker that tackled them, Etc resulting in injury. That being said, I don't think you're wrong to follow up with the handler, but I don't think he would be 100% wrong if he doesn't agree to pay up.

Best thing you could do is make sure everyone in the area knew about the dangerous piece of $&@" that the guy was packing. I've seen a lot of dogs that would nip at a person when being handled, but if a tied dog bites a handler he oughta be disposed of. Period. There's plenty in the dark woods to deal with without having to accommodate the bad manners of someone else's dog.
And I think the right thing for the owner to do would be to cover any incurred expense on your part. He's a chickencrap if he isn't man enough to call you back...

Posted by JiM on 05-24-2015 11:24 PM:

I don't know about other states but in Indiana, it is a legal issue whether you want it to be or not. If you go to the ER for any kind if animal bite, you won't be released until the police report is completed by the local cops.
That dogs owner is absolutely responsible for every penny of the cost. That is why UKC. Isn't involved in these things, the law runs the show on dog bites, UKC has no say.

That was probably this dogs daddy. How much you wanna bet this one gets bred too?

Posted by Harry Middleton on 05-25-2015 12:30 AM:

DFred there was an 11 year old tagging along and thankfully it didn't happen to him. The man said for me to ask that young boy about him saying not to walk in front of his dog. Again, I didn't get that warning.
The hospital did say they were required to report it, and they did. Animal Control said it happened across State lines. That was the end to that.
FYI there is not, and should not, be an "associated risk" of a dog biting a person, or a dog. We all know not to slip up on another man's dog, but merely walking in front of it shouldn't have to be a risk.
I would hope nothing I hunt would do this, but if it did I believe a courtesy call to make sure all is ok would be in order.
I value everyone's input and thanks for responding.

If you want to follow up with it. Find out what state and county he lives in and call the health officer for that county. They will probably follow up and should quarantine the dog for 21 days.

If the guy won't call you back I would not worry about causing him a problem. If the dog doesn't have the shot they might do something and I thought dogs were suppose to have their shots in order to compete in UKC events.

What kind of person would hunt a dog like this? Dogs that bite dogs don't belong in hunts. Dogs that bite people don't belong on this planet.

Posted by Harry Middleton on 05-25-2015 02:55 AM:

I'm going to do some follow up on it Tuesday. I wish I could post a picture on here.

Posted by croatankid on 05-25-2015 04:37 AM:

weren't there other folks there? surely one of them witnessed the event or of they didn't see the actual bite they must be aware that you weren't bitten before the hunt. so someone will surely be a witness for you. what about the judge? or the other hunters? contact the hunt club and ask for this information. i belive if you visit a lawyer and explain what happened, he will be glad to take the case on commission because he can make something happen. it's important to move on this right away. to do otherwise undermines your case.

Yes it was a three dog cast. A one cast hunt. Hunt director was on the cast and he was also judging. He and the other guy are friends. It was very obvious to all what happened. I talked to the hunt director a couple of days later and asked him to have the man call me. I haven't heard back from anyone. It was unfortunate that it happened, but it did. I don't wanna anyone to get into trouble over, but I would like the peace of mind knowing the dog was vaccinated. And if the man doesn't call me then the only way I'll know is to have the health department/animal control officer get involved.

Posted by billjesstaylor on 05-25-2015 05:57 AM:

Wisconsin has a rabies control law in which there is a mandatory 10 day quarantine following the bite. If the dog owner can show proof of vacination he may quarantine the animal at his home. If not, then dog get quarantined to the custody of the local pound. At the end of the 10 days the dog gets an exam and vet has to sign off. When law enforcement is notified they make a report and forward to health department. But only the bite victim can recoup their expenses through civil litigation.

I think in any KC hunt it should be reported. May also show a pattern for a particular dog. If the owner knows he has a mean dog, and is not responsible enough to keep that particular dog out of the hunts, then the KC should step in for the safety of everyone involved. Most of us grown men can probably shrug it off, but I'd hate to see a kid get chewed up at an event.

This situation is completely UNacceptable.

Your hand may only be swollen and sore, but it could just as easily have a torn tendon that needs surgery, or an infection in the bone from the bite. I would hope you wouldn't let that go.

Really, there is NO excuse for a dog to act that way. Today, it was your hand.....tomorrow, a young child's FACE....

Please take care of business; dogs like that one make everybody's dog look bad...

Posted by Harry Middleton on 05-25-2015 07:07 AM:

I wouldn't think my hand would still be as tender as it is. It's sore for about a 1 inch diameter around the bite. Not trying to rant and rave about it but I don't think any of the KC's have a rule to protect the persons that make these hunts possible. I know if i make that drive again and draw the same dog, me and my pup are going to dinner instead of hunting. My hopes are that it all gets worked out without any ill feelings. He seemed to be a good person, but he had to know there were issues with that particular dog.
Thanks for all the replies!!!!!!
