Just wanted to say thanks.....
Just wanted to say thanks to all of the great hound people that have pups from the litters I have raised or that are out of one of our studs. I heard a rumor that I am the only one who can win with pups from these crosses....which is not at all true...not by a long shot. I have pups from my males and females spread all over the country and below is a list of " other" people who have competed in competition events and won with their pups or one of my dogs.
To each and everyone of these people (sorry if I left anyone out) I want to say thank you for investing your time and money into proving these pups you got from crosses I have made.....can win in competition. I really appreciate it and you are all helping me and the rest of the breed to produce better more competitive redbones.

Shane the reason these people win with your crosses are they hunt the dogs hard, they don't leave them sit in the kennel, they are hunting them hard,if you want to be in the winners circle you got to hunt the dog to keep it in shape, the more they get hunted that the more they learn.not everybody get train dogs.
George
Thanks George.
I have always believed you get out of these dogs what you put in and i have tried to get my pups and young dogs into the hands of people I believe in....and I am happy to see it is working. If you are going to make a cross you believe might be a great one....you need to get the pups to people who know what to do and have a burning desire to put in the long hours so that pup gets its chance to reach its full potential....

I agree Richard.
Making well thought out crosses that produce pups with the "right stuff" is that fuel. But what I am not sure everyone understands is....you still have to work hard to ignite that flame and then continuously work to keep it fed.
I believe there are lots of great crosses made each year in our breed...but I think too many times these pups don't get the opportunity they really deserve.
What i mean by that is many people who get them just do not really understand the phases that dogs go through from pup to young started dog, to well started dog, to finished dog. Too many people buy a well bred pup and think they can raise it in a kennel till its 6 or 7 months old and then take it hunting a few times with the old dogs and it "should" be running and treeing.
I think many get turned off when they dont and assume the got a dud from the litter. Thats why when I pick people to get one of my pups I try to make sure they have started and trained young dogs before. So they dont get turned off by unrealistic expectations of what they "want" to see their dog doing.
Everyone has their own way of starting and training dogs....but I want people to know that even if you are lucky enough to get a pup that is a complete natural ( and this would be a very low % of dogs produced in our breed) you will still have to train this dog along the way. What I mean by that is....there are two basic kinds of training ....encouragement and discouragement.
I call the latter correction and even a natural born tree dog will always need some correction along the way as in learning to lead and handle, correction for treeing off game in some cases, correction for running off game in other cases, etc.
If there is one thing I hope people realize in this breed it is that even the best dogs.....the biggest winning dogs of this breed and every other breed had to be actively managed and trained and tuned and tweaked along the way before and during that winning. Dogs are like children....you have to invest lots of quality time in them and make sure they stay on track with where you want them to go.....if you start to slack or look the other way very long.....most will get distracted and it usually happens when they are exposed to other dogs with bad habits that they will encounter in competition hunts. As a rule, I try to hunt whatever dog I am pushing in competition at any given time at least 3 nights alone for every weekend of competition hunting with other dogs just to keep their head straight. I also try to drop them at least one time on my way home from a competition hunt by their selves just to get what happened during the cast cleared out of their head. I think building a dogs confidence is key to that dog doing what it needs to do in competition without being influenced by other dogs in the cast. I want to have the leader of the pack....not a follower....and leaders have confidence that is hard to rattle.
Hunting a dog alone builds confidence quicker than anything else I have seen. Well, didn't mean to turn this thread into a training seminar...lol
But anyhow, I am grateful to all those who have taken the time and invested their money into giving pups from my dogs the chance I feel they deserve. When I make a cross, I feel like they should have the "fuel" to ignite a winner in each pup... but its owner still has to know how to produce that first spark and once that fire is lit....they have to keep feeding that flame all the way to the winners circle! Good luck everyone....shane

I agree 100%
As a newcomer to coon hunting, I wasn't influenced by oldtimer methods of starting pups. I started them the same way I trained bird dog pups and it worked. I also had real good advice from Ted Baker, and read John Wicks books and used what I though made sense. I think a pup learns much better on his own than by following an old dog, and builds his confidence much better and becomes a leader, independent, loner(whatever u want to call it). It sure worked for me on my first 2 pups and the others I'm starting now. Shane, write a short book in your spare time and add to your income and help all the novices, you've got a lot of good knowledge to share.

I just listed out the people who were winning with pups out of the Outlaw studs from crosses I made or raised.....if we list out everyone winning with the Moonlight offspring the list would be very long indeed. Although I helped a lot with Aftershock and many of the other Moonlight dogs I didn't want to take any credit for placing any of the pups from that line. Joe has won a lot over the years...thats for sure.
I have not hunted with Jenny yet, but I keep hearing about her..she must be a good one. Its great to see people working together and combining different lines to come up with new and different styles of winners. Speaking of which, I got four of the cutest little pups Out in the back yard that combines Dual Grand Champion Outlaw Billy the Kid x Dual Grand Champion River Ridge Willow.....and I think they are going to be some loud little thangs! Lots of good proven blood, up close in that pedigree.....cant wait till mine gets old enough to start
Will we see Joe handling Jenny in more hunts down the road?
