Turn Outs At Major Hunts,

I have seen some turnouts at major hunts that are a 1/4 of what they used to be. so tell me what makes you want to go to the major hunts?

The last one was this last weekend it was a acha world hunt and only had 24 entries , this same hunt last year had around 50 and yr before had 120 something I think.

Now it doesn't look like the ukc hunts have taken such a big hit but have declined so tell me what does it take to get the numbers back up.

The deal breaker for me is the hunt format. If the hunt is won by highest score brought in, I'm out. If the hunt is a hunt off type format where you beat the dogs you draw until you get beat or win it all, I'm in.

AGREED.

I think the UKC World Hunt is the most makeable world hunt for the common working man because it is all weekend hunts except for the Thursday Finals night. It requires the least time off from work and the fewest nights in the motel. If you got an owner paying all the expenses, these are not big issues but if you are a family person doing it on your own, these things make a difference. Of course $27000 goes a long ways towards mitigating those things.......if you can win it!

Just curious Jim is this bc some high scores come in and might not be on the up and up or do you not like them for other reasons?

I would guess because the scores have alot do to with the guide you draw get a good one tree a few coons win your cast with a big score get a bad one and tree one coon win your cast dogs worked the same just luck of the draw

Jim, you can still go to the other KC and only go on Thursday night and get in. Of course you are limiting your chances. Hotel cost would still be the same or cheaper because you not going for two weekends. Entry might be a tad higher (depending on if you nominated your dog earlier in the year) but you also have the chance of getting all that back IF you make the semi finals. I have seen many dogs only hunt on Thursday night at the other KC and get in.
Plus the fact with UKC you have to go to two different parts of the country two weekends in a row. A lot of travel and gas. IMO UKC is not any cheaper than the other KC.

You make some excellent points and I don't want any part of another one verses the other argument. Great that we have both of them.

TOO MANY HUNTS THESE DAYS. A HUNTER NOW HAS TO PICK IN CHOOSE WHERE TO GO, NOBODY CAN MAKE THEM ALL. THEY USE TO BE LIKE ONE MAJOR HUNT EVERY 3 OR 4 MONTHS AND EVERYONE WOULD WAIT TO GO TO THAT HUNT. THE WAY IT IS NOW YOU CAN GO TO WHAT PEOPLE CALL A MAJOR HUNT EVERY WEEKEND SOME WHERE. THE KENNEL CLUBS NOW IF THEY HAVE A 100 DOGS IN 4 HUNTS IN A 100 MILE RADIUS THEY MAKE MORE MONEY THAN ONE HUNT WITH A 100 DOGS BECAUSE OF LICENSE FEES AND EVERYTHING. WITH REGISTRIES HAVING A HUNT 6 NIGHTS A WEEK THEY ARE WAY TOO MANY HUNTS THESE DAYS. PRESTIGE OF WINNING DON'T MEAN WHAT IT ONCE DID FOR SURE.

I know very well what it takes to win in a "highest score wins" format and I don't care to operate that way. I enjoy just hunting against the dogs drawn, hunt where the guide takes you, win your cast by beating the dogs you draw and move on to the next round.

I never hunted Autumn Oaks until they changed the format to the Grand 16. I'm not taking anything away from past winners but knowing good and well you had to score around 1600-1800 points to even have a chance was laughable, weather they were honest or dis-honest.

I don't hit the big hunts. They are 60% dog power and the other 40% luck on drawing a good guide. I'm with jim beating who you draw is the way to go because we can't control what goes on in the other casts.

Also, I don't care the hunt format or what kennel club you are in you have to have dogs willing to get treed and stay treed. It only takes one dog that trails all night to ruin a good cast I have been here many times, big and small hunts.

With the economy and gas prices the way they are I woul say that also has a huge factor in entries at major hunts. Heck gas prices are the number one factor in hurting even local hunts.

Realistically, I'd say more people are in the same boat, but just won't admit it.

I think that's the way I'd enjoy the format if I were hunting also. It seems it would take a lot of "luck" factors out of it ( like one cast gets to hunt cornfields while the other gets stuck mountains) all you'd have to worry about is beating the dogs you're with.

Redgy hit the nail on the head in my opinion. There are way to many hunts, I think this is what hurts the numbers and hurts the prestige of the hunt titles.

Yep, we probably all agree on this one but the problem is that it is not something that is ever likely to change. Neither KC is about to give ground on the number of events.

This is a little misleading I think. UKC has always restricted how many events a club can have because yes, we also agree that too many events is not healthy for the sport. And with that I'll make two points. 1) I'm not sure if they other registries restrict how many events a club can have but if they do, I'm pretty sure it's not as restrictive as UKC is. And 2) every time a club that is limited out on UKC dates calls in requesting a date and we have to refuse them, they almost always respond with, "Fine, we'll call Registry X." So clubs, not just registries, must share the responsibility that there are too many events.

I think UKC deserves a little credit in this respect because we could certainly sell more hunt licenses but in our opinion that is not in our best interest.
