Pup Training Help

I got a 6 1/2 month old walker male out of mojo/wipe out that I'm trying to get started. Dont know a lot about it though. He goes crazy over a cagged coon. I've been running him with a old 10 year old male who is pretty darn good. On the tree he hasnt opened up yet but will whine and chew on the tree. is this a bad thing?

Could be in the future but as pup id try to break him of that chewing....the whinning I've had dogs do it myself....just when u get to the tree I've had to personally show the dog I want them to bark at it but with ur older dog he will learn he's still just a pup u have to rember that as well there's a lot of things u can do to start a pup some easier than others.....if u want some more info pm ill tell ya how I do it but there's really no right or wrong way just gotta make sure he does the job and ur good.

most pups chew everything i have got up could it be teething

you might be reading a little too much into the chewing. I agree that most pups chew on everything anyway. this is way to early in this pups life to think you can tell anything about how he will hunt when he gets old enough to really know what he is doing. I would be careful about how much hunting you do with him at this age and not worry about trying to correct any faults for at least a few more months. if you are gonna hunt him at all at this age he just needs to have fun. he is not mature enough to handle any major correction at this age. I believe your pup will do just fine by the time he is 9-10 months old and if not then that will be the time to slowly start correcting him.

I would just hunt him 1 or 2 a week, in your best spots. Be patient, If he is barking at a cage coon. I wouldn't show him any more. Just keep him in the woods, as he matures he will track more and tree. Different dogs will start treeing at different ages. I know wipe out dogs have a tendency to start treeing lately. Because he has wipe out in him, I wouldn't worry if he doesn't start treeing anytime soon.
I would keep him in the woods just enough to keep him familiar with the woods, but also not so much that you burn him out at an early age.

the pup is too young. in my opinion you will make him a much better dog if you let him get 8 to 12 months old before you put him in the woods..

JMO, but I would not be showing him caged coons. Let him mature a little an take him to where the coons are feeding an unsnap him he will figure it out, it will cause you a lot less head aces for yourself..

pup training

I guess im a "little green" at the whole coon thing its been so long since ive hunted with grandpa. I thought you wanted to show a pup as many coon as possible. ive only taken him out a hand full of times with the older dog, when i first drop him he will stay with the other dog but after a while he will come back and stay kinda close by. I was hoping the more i go out he would start staying away to hunt more. Thanks for all your advice.

he is just too young mentally and probly physically too.
when he is older he will have more courage and stamina to go.
taking them this young they will start tracking the other dogs or get lost and even start tracking you. chase bark cause they cant keep up and all kinds of faults cause by pushing them too young and then they have a lifetime fault you have to break or deal with. could be why he is chewing at the tree, he thinks the other dogs are mad at that tree for some reason. too young to have the sense or the brain power to figure it out. believe me its a lot easier to teach one a fault than it is to break them of it once they start. I have not seen many at all started at 6 months old that did not have a man made fault because they were just too young when started.
