Landowners--another thought

I'm wondering what people's take are on this, because the consistent perspectives seem to be: my dog doesn't know property lines so you can't shoot him/or whatever.

Your hound comes on my property, which I could care less about, but my border collie is protective of his home turf. Your hound trees on my property and the border collie says "heck no, I'm going to run you off." Border collie goes in for the fight and naturally your hound must protect himself. My dog is weird, no matter how many times another dog pins him, he will jump back up and go back at it--he will just not submit. So your dog has to really put the hurt on my dog just to protect himself--that's natural and logical.

Now you come onto my property to retrieve your dog like a responsible hunter, but my dog tries to run you off and may even bite you. Naturally you must also protect yourself--how far you might have to go could get ugly, who knows, but it of course necessary and fair for you to defend yourself.

So your dog has crossed on to my property and my dog has attacked you and your dog to protect his home--neither one has done anything wrong, it's natural for dogs. What if my dog is so aggressive you have to shoot him? What if your dog tears my dog up?

Does anyone ever think about that or take scenarios like that in that into consideration when it comes to landowners shooting hounds?

I know people are usually talking about the landowner shooting their dog for no reason, so this scenario isn't meant to be a comparison to those situations at all.

(and be noted, my dog has never bit anyone nor tried)

Yes I've thought about all type of scinereos like this. Bottom line is I aint going to shoot your dog unless it is an absolute life or death situation for me or my animal\animals and I expect the same from others. Absolute life or death situations are rare, but in the rare occurance something like that happens all we can do is try to stay calm.....and probably cry!

if somebody shoots my dog for a reason that's fine, it sucks and im gunna be aggervated and upset that im out that much money but if the landowner had a logical reason to kill it then I wouldn't say too much. I had a hound shot because it walked in the guys yard and ate some hot dog buns that was meant for the coons so the guy shot him a situation like that I lose my head and somebodys getting an ass whoopin!

One of the tracks I hunt as 2 different landowners that border it. The track I hunt is large and the others are mostly 10 acres with a home .. Even though I rarely go that far across the track I hunt to get on them I have went and talked to them both, got their phone numbers and call before we go hunting to let them know we are there.. I've never been told not to come on their property to retrieve a dog and the few times I've ended up there they came out to hear the dogs and see the coon..
Put yourself in their shoes, you hear a commotion and get up to see light easing across your propriety or a vehicle coming down your driveway with the lights off...
People will think more of you and other coon hunters if you simply pay them a visit and talk to them before hand ..

One thing around here is u dont know what other coonhunters have done to already piss them off!! Then you pay the price!! Shooting coons right next to houses! Shining lights across pastures and at houses! Ive seen it all. I can see where they would take it out on the dog they see later!!

I have only one guy that jumps all over me when my dogs end up at his house with 3 acres next to a creek I have permission from everyone else around here old joe just had triple bypass maybe that will slow him down but I doubt it ! I really try to not go there but it happens he knows who I am by name maybe he just likes to give me a hard time because he can ! on another note came out of barn after chores one night heard a couple dogs running down back jumped on my buggy rode down there scared the living bejesus out of the guy he said i'll get my dogs and leave I said hunt on I just want you to know that I know your here ! I don't post my land anyone is welcome to hunt but asking first would be nice !
