Dog Shot Last Night In Southern Missouri In SW Barry County
Me and my buddy was huntin last night. Buddy of mine has hunted this area for 40 years. Dogs got out of pocket got over by this house and next thing we know as we are heading in through there he shoots and a dog starts squallin. We started hollering at the guy and he didnt shoot any more. The property my buddy has permission to be on goes right up to this dudes house almost. We never got off the property to get our dogs. The dog was shot with a shotgun. Shot her eye out and had like 14 shot pellets in her. When I first saw her I thought she had been shot with a rifle. She was a bloody mess on her left front leg. I thought he had shot her through her leg with a rifle, but that wasnt the case. Anyway Barry county sheriff wont do nothing. says nothing they can do. I dont buy that at all. They didnt even want to come out there. So we just went up there and had a little chat with the guy.
Dog was taken to the vet they sowed her eye shut dont know what else was done i think she will make it probably will be blind in one eye.
Im sure even ar. has animal cruelty laws, i would call the local D.A. and let him know that if charges arent filed that you are going to call every newspaper and Tv. station that the people that elect him watch. And your next stop should be at a lawyers office to file a civil case for damages. Dont just let it go.

Tell us about your chat with the shooter.
If they don't do anything you should. If hes got a dog running lose put some meat out on the road and sit and wait.I know it sounds mean but this shooting dog stuff needs to stop. I guarantee if you got even he wouldn't do this again. I would let him know in a round about way that you did it.

The Chat with the shooter. LOL nothing really happened just a little chat.
My buddy is trying to get something done. He has been all day working on it. A civil suit against the guy has been the only suggestion so far.
Another thing the makes the case even more difficult is that on one side of the road is arkansas and the side the dog got shot on is in Missouri. We turned loose in Arkansas and the dogs peeled out and crossed the road and got in Missouri and thats where the shooting happened

You have to call the game warden. its against law in Missouri. to shoot dog but it is a hunting violation gotta get game warden involved

This happened to me last night luckily the idiot didn't hit my dog. Couldn't figure out why the hell he was shooting anyways because he wouldn't admit to shooting. But what can you really do I wanted to strangle the son of a gun but it isn't worth losing my life over.

What I don't understand home owners don't understand that we hunters can see them on there porch in the light when 99 percent of the time they can't see us ...... Kinda stupid on there part.
I believe an eye for an eye. A dogs life isn't worth a persons life I don't care how big of a pos he is. If you can whip him real good that's different but most of the guys that do that kind of thing wont let you catch them out in public. If you do beat on him some I would guarantee the sheriffs department would press charges against you then.

Yes sir it does need to stop. Ive been huntin since the late 70's and my buddy is 10 years older than me and hunted all his life for the most part, and where this dog got shot is not 1/2 mile from my buddies house. But that is the first dog him or I has ever gotten shot out coon huntin. Whats weird it wasnt some new spot or something been hunting there for years. This aint the Wild West any more need to be some laws in place. Im not sure, but I think the guy may have been drunk too he kinda acted like it.
Criminal case - You need to get in touch with the local DA's office, ask them for a review of the case. Do not let a local barney Fife decide what not to investigate. There are multiple charges that can be filed against this shooter. if the DA's office reviews and does nothing try to pressure him into doing something; have all coonhunters you know in that state to call his office, all on the same day, contact the local paper challenging the fact that animal cruelty is ignored in this county...pressure often leads to prosecution. Hopefully the conversation with the DA is all it takes, but pressure tactics will help if that conversation does not.
Civil case - This can often be more costly than the proceeds, lawyers are expensive. You need to develop as much evidence as possible. If the dog was wearing a garmin you need to get someone with the know-how to download the dogs tracks to a map to show where the dog roamed. pictures of the dog, save the vet receipts, print ads of dogs for sale or similar ability/titles and use these to establish actual value if the dog dies, if the dog survives save all medical bills. To save the cost of a lawyer, noptify the shooter that you are planning to file a civil suit if he does not re-imburse the cost of all medical bills as well as secondart costs like mileage, time away from work. Create an estimate and mail a copy of the letter to him certified mail. Give him 14 days to respond. if he ignores and does not respond take all the evidence to a civil trial lawyer and good luck.

Check these out
There are only 2 reasons you can shoot a dog in Missouri, see links below, it sounds as neither of these apply.

Print these out and have with you when you talk to the DA, most county officials these days have no clue about dog laws.
