Dc 40 Problem?

Anyone have any ideas to what may be wrong with my dc 40 collar? I turn my dog loose and it will track him up to 50 yards then loosed him, shows a big ? I just put a new antenna on it thinking that was the problem and it didn't help. Also, I updated the software on it through my computer and it didn't help. Anyone have any ideas? The collar is almost 2 yrs old, if I send it to garmin am I goin to have to buy a new collar or will the replace it? THANKS

Make sure it is not your receiver. Test a different collar, see what it does, then report back.

I run 2 other collars with it. Another DC 40 and DC 30. They both worked perfect with it as always. Just that 1 collar would not pick the dog up after around 50 yrds but when he came back in it would as soon as I could see him. It was doing the same thing before I updated the software and bought another antenna....

What antenna did you buy?
Take it off and reinstall it. Some people report taking the collar out of the handheld and putting it back in helps but I never personally seen any luck with that.
Are you loosing signal on the collar or is the collar loosing GPS lock.
A guy was describing his collar as loosing connection to the handheld but when I got my hands on it that was not the case at all, it was loosing GPS lock.
You are describing it as loosing signal from the collar to the handheld but the antenna should have fixed that 90% of the time. I hope you did not use the bad antenna for a while now and have destroyed the transmitter in the collar.

I will try and re- install it. I assumed the antenna was bad on it a week ago while hunting it did this on the first drop. So I turned it off and put a doff. collar on it. Then I ordered a new antenna and upgraded the software. Tried to use it with the new antenna last night and it did the same thing as it did before. Would go around 50 yrds and would show on the receiver DOG ? I press menu when the collar is close to check the COMM signal and it will read like 3 out of 4 bars.. Going to take the antenna off and put it back on and try it tonight again

What does losing GPS lock mean is wrong? Both my collars were doing that Thursday night. I was hoping it was just the area I was in.

If both collars did it, I would not be too concerned.
Think about a dog that is bad to tree in hole, a hole big enough for the dog to get his head and neck in. That will block the the GPS receiver's ability to read satellite telemetry and cause the collar to report poor "GPS coverage". When the dog pulls his head out, GPS telemetry starts coming in again on the collar. Sometimes this can happen without a dog getting in a hole but if your collar does it alot, you more than likely are fixing to have problems. GPS lock problems are rare with today's receivers, including the receivers and collars for the Garmin system.
Some of the first generation GPS handhelds for public consumption were bad for this, but as time progresses and receivers become more "sensitive", due to technology, these problems are not very prevalent.
The guy's collars I worked on would not make gps lock like they should. Dropped out often so they went back to Garmin.

I bought 2 used ones, that had this problem for 100 bucks a peice, course when I bought them there was nothing wrong with them "like new" l experienced the same thing that you are on your collars so of course I did the same thing. New long range antenna master reset, and new up date. Problem is one would not turn back on and the other went worked about 1 hr, range never did increase and then it shut off as well. I guess I will send them back to garmin at some point. I have 4 other collars so I really didn't miss them, was just wanting them for pups. I hunt more than 1 dog at a time. The good deal wasn't such a good deal after all for me, should have bought new to begin with.

.

If this was mentioned I missed it but something else to try.

Change the ID number on the collar in case there is an interference problem.
