Older dog or not?

Posted a thread a couple weeks ago about hunting a pup alone or with older dogs a lot of people said if they will go hunt alone don't run them with any older dogs. So this is why I am posting this.... Ran into some fellow hunters tonight at the first drop they were just up the road and I didn't want to make the drop since they were in the area first so I went up and talked to them and asked them the best way to start a pup.. He said its very difficult to start a pup alone ( this I understood) but he said run them with an older no matter what even if they go hunting alone, he is an older guy and hunts every night and has hunted for years so I know he is pretty smart at treeing some coon. Just wondering what the rest of you think about this??

Being a good competition trainer is being able to give your dog what you see he needs for the style of hunting you are interested in.

Any rummy can say to hunt them solely alone, but if it takes being with another dog to get them to do something, I'm gonna do it. They key is knowing when, where and what dogs to hunt the pup with and how much...

I mix it up for a pup.Ive got an old slow female here that I like to start my pups with then I have some younger faster dogs to hunt them with when they start treeing in front of the old dog.Then I hunt them alone about half the time when they start hunting with the younger faster dogs.Thats how I like doing it but sometimes if they stop progressing like they should I go back to the old dog again.

Before any dog can become a top dog that dog must need confidence. If you hunt a young dog alone too soon, it will be hard to build its confidence. Then again, if you only hunt the dog with older dogs, it may never get the needed confidence.

The trainer needs to be able to read their dog.

The gentleman you ran into in the woods maybe a pleasure hunter who prefers to run many dogs together. Many people on here want a dog that can compete well. Therefore, many will hunt the dog alone as soon as they feel it needs to be singled out.

i always get a caged coon at 6 to 10 mons old if they show interst i will turn it out let them see it go and let the coon get a start in a open feild where it has to run to get to a tree if the pup runs it to the tree i will tie it back and shoot it out but even if it does all this it wont get anymore caged coon i lead it for at lest 2 wks and lead it to the tree as soon as it starts treeing when we go in when the old dog strikes i will turn it in see if it will run track when it starts running and treeing with the old dog i will start hunting it alone to build its cofidence up but kep hunting it every so often hunt it with another dog so it will also learn to socialize with other dogs

dang you dont give them much slack do ya i been foolin with dogs all my life ive seen alot that dont do nothing till thier 2 yrs old if they dont start by then then its time to move on jmo

dogs today start earlier. Back in the day most didnt start till they was 2

yea you got a point todays dogs are bred to go but i will still give a dog till 2 to start doing something postive but i usally dont startanything till its 10 or 11 mons but like you say im old school i dont like change lol

u would like wat i hunt they take track as they come. There the 2 best coon dogs i ever own. The female just mite make a com dog. She doest pay att. To any dog like b alone shes a nice track very accurate. The male is also a track dogs likes have ricky also. Both can tree a hot track or cold. I been hunting sense 1975
