The English Registry was started over a hundred years ago by UKC. In 1945 a group of Bluetick Breeders led mostly by O.O. Grant met and drew up a standred and started the Bluetick Breeders Assoc.

There is really no line to draw; Blueticks are Bluetick But English can be any color.

I think this is a good question...

The way I see it, the Bluetick was bred for a color trait..whereas the English dogs were not. And if the Bluetick was bred to be a different "purebred" dog, why not the Redtick?

Bluetick, Redtick, spotted, etc colors were in the English Registry in the begining. In 1945 O.O. Grant (bluetick) and Lester Nance (walker) headed groups to promote these colors separate. UKC went along with it and the Bluetick & Treeing Walker Breed registries were started. These colors are still in the English Breed.

Times have changed but I feel sure that Redtick fanciers could organize and go to UKC and present their case and maybe become another breed. English would still have the color; but Breeders could take pride in promoting their Redticks as a separate Breed like the bluetick and walker men do.

i read a full cry article from the late '50's and back then a few english folks were indeed trying to seperate the redtick as it's own breed as well. also, some didn't like the term "english" hound since really these dogs, while having roots in europe, are american. atleast that was their take on it anyway.

Don't forget to mention the English have a little more fang power. Lol

Diversity within the breed is one of the best things the English have going for them. This breed is coming on. They have several breeders who know what it takes to produce good dogs, and that is breeding for dogs that tree coon fast. Lester Nance, Joe House and others in the Walker breed realized this decades ago. Once you start breeding for color, ear length, a certain type of track mouth and other bells and whistles you lose in the areas that really matter. The English guys have a good thing going.
