Gundogs vs Field Trail dogs

Can anyone tell me what the differents in Gundogs and Field Trail dogs are because i had someone tell me that my dogs wasn`t field trail dogs today and i was told this in the last couple weeks also but when i hunt or hunted my so called non field trail dogs against his they kick there. I know of some guys that have field trail dogs that don`t gun hunt over these dogs what the use in haveing these dogs if you can`t hunt with them isn`t that the point to have both in one dog it don`t make since for someone to bad mouth someones else dogs and when they turn around and get beat by these gundogs . I would hate to know someone would sit around and bad mouth my dogs and me and when these guys and they know who they are when it comes right down to it they are just jealous and see that i got better dogs then they do who cares they don`t have titles in front of there names it just shows who the better man is . THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MY SUCKY FIELD TRAIL DOGS JIMMY LEACH

My thought on this on going problem. Field trial dog=a dog without enough nose to run in any condition. A rabbit dog how ever can run in any condition what so ever.... The best dog don't all ways win trials. As a rule he is the first one to the truck, for doing most of the work & jumping most of the rabbits. Thats when your field trial dog wins the hunt for doing nothing at all , just looking busy. Sad but true. Seen it quite often. Im glad to hear that your dogs did well . A little extra nose in the field can go a long way. That took me years to figure out.

let me get this straight your telling me that a campaigned hound that gets ran year round in all condtions several time a week being soloed 80percent of the time can't put meat on the table as good as a dog that gets pulled out of the box once a year to go boo hoo around until a rabbit smacks him in the face WOW huh

I do agree best dog don't alway win but that's a pretty bold statment

Jmo aint no diffrance Feed whatever makes you happy

Thanks

JIMMY IVE SEEN WHAT UR TALKIN ABOUT!

I to also seen those super tight jawed fox hounds win-----while a ol barrel chested meat hound did carry the hole cast on jumpin and recoverys---ive judged it myself -that is the way it is --been on both sides of the fence! Rules are rules I dont always agree---bottomline is ifin I didnt like it I would go to a diferent format or reg.-----I dont breed fer a all grand champ. litter-or litters in a three generation ped.----and ill be the 1st to tell ya seen alot of hounds win and judged hounds that won and have trialed against em more than once that I believe that a man would be a hungry man ifin he depended on that 1 hound fer meat! My friend if ur hounds keep ur barrel hot and ur belly and freezer stocked---sum 1 calls em junk but goes to the field to shoot off of em is a 1st class trophy!

Meat hounds

Well I guess my trial hounds I have are meat hounds too. I don't hunt my dogs to fill my freezer. I kill a few rabbits now and then. Mostly I just like to hear them run and see them compete against eachother. I would gladly run my trial dogs against your Meat hounds any day and if they don't jump just as many and get just as many recoveries I would be surprised.
Not saying anything about your hounds just saying my hounds have proven themselves many times.

I can tell you the difference..................
I hunted with a 17 year old kid once that had a pretty good rabbit dog. The only thing that kept him from being "field trial" material was that he was slower than most dogs.
BUT , the kid killed alot of rabbits with him.
Went hunting good and had a pretty good nose.
That dog would run a rabbit around as many times as it took for you to kill the rabbit. He'd just keep plugging along in any kind of weather.
My dog was faster and the kid didn't like my dog leading the race. Said he was gonna shoot him and get a new dog. I told him that'd be a BIG mistake. Not many dogs could run the same rabbit half as long as that dog could.

I don't know why people always have to compete with each other.
I'm not a "trialer" , but I have a friend who likes them. Our dogs run different , but I wouldn't say that either one was "better" than the other. You know why? BECAUSE WE DON'T CARE !
We're friends and that's all that really matters. We run our dogs together and we enjoy it.
I've also got 2 friends that have Bassett hounds that'll pound rabbits pretty good. And they trial also. Both of them have won the Bassett World Championship a time or two.
I've been to a few of their trials and it cracks us up to hear the other guys say that you can't run Bassetts and Beagles together. We do it all the time ! LOL

I think too many people worry about the petty stuff.
In my opinion , if a guy is worried about someone badmouthing his dogs , it's only because he's worried about losing out on some sales.
I don't worry about selling any of my dogs , and I always give my leftover pups away. So , anybody can say whatever they want about my dogs. I just don't care ! LOL

I run my dogs year arround as well but I just kill a few bunnies a year to them. I trial my so called meat hounds but I have not filled a freezer in years with rabbits there just are not enough of them arround here to do that. I have and feed beagles because I love to listen to them run and the most fun I have is starting pups. UKC dogs are starting to become tighter mouthed for the sake of making sure when the dog gets struck in they are more likely to produce a rabbit without loosing points. In return I am afraid doing this we are loosing some of the nose that the breed standard had in the begining. I like my dogs to be as close to 15in as I can get and I want them to be tight enough mouthed that I can strike them in on one bark. I am not a fan of a 15in dog waiting arround for another dog to do the work and then take over and run off with the rabbit but I am seeing more and more of that. I hunt and trial the same dogs and if they are good ones they will do just fine in both fields. I think we are all wanting the same thing in a dog just most of the time we forget they are just dogs.

I bet I could pick a day and conditions that they couldn't run.
And , I'd bet most houndsman with enough experience could do the same.

JackBob...
I hear ya... I have no reason to talk about someones dogs unless it is good. I prefer a big beagle with a lot of speed but to each his own. I personally do not care for a slow dog but there are a lot of people who enjoy them and that is all that matters. I did run with a kid who had a good bassett but in an hour we had to put it in the box the poor thing just could not keep up. He would not have taken $1000 for his dog and there was nothing wrong with that because he was the one feeding it.

dunno if this helps or not but he could have been referring to years back trial dogs were'nt exactly a dog you would want to gun hunt over b/c you might starve to death waiting on them to circle a rabbit. When i got my first beagle almost 14 years ago, people would ask me if she was a trial dog or a gun dog. I did'nt know the difference today I don't think there is a real difference if you're reading this board at least LOL. Back in the day to many in our area midwest & southern U.s... a "trial dog" was a brace hound style of dog. Walky-talky. SLOW, and Gun dogs were more of a run to catch or at least run with a bit of determination to gain ground on a rabbit... Nowadays a trial dog is a very broad term.

Nope , we don't all want the same thing in a dog.
Ain't nothing I like better than to listen to a dog cold-trail a rabbit up and get it jumped. Once it's jumped and running , I'd actually prefer they went and found another old track.
I enjoy the same thing out of my coondogs.
It just amazes me what they can do with their nose.

I don't carry a gun but only once a year. The rest of the time , it's friends and the grandkids. But , most of the time , I'm by myself just listening to the dogs.

Boy , ain't that the truth ! LOL

And , I better clarify , I like a dog that can cold-trail , but he better be bustin' his butt doing it !
DON'T like no slow dog !

ASKING A QUESTION WAS ALL

All i was asking was for someone to tell me the diffrent in field trail dogs and gundogs are so when someone ask me i can tell them and i wasn`t bad mouthing anyone or there dogs . I HAVE 2 LOKO GO FEMALES 4 BRANKO BEAGLES AND 8 SUNDOWN BEAGLES . I don`t set out to fill my freezer every year or see how many guys i can get to come down and hunt with me just to make a name for yourself . I want a dog that can run in all conditions that is what i work hard on if they can`t it don`t stay here also my hounds don`t have to prove anything to me or anybody else as long as they please me thats all that matter. Where i live there is maybe a hand full of guys that has beagles but when someone calls that don`t have beagles and want to go rabbit hunting and they have called me to take them and they offer to pay me to take them hunting and they ask me with dogs as good as these why don`t i put them in hunts to compete aganist other dogs and i said why should i if you are calling and paying me to hunt with with my dogs thats good enough for me and as CSG said that a 1st class trophy that can`t be beat Thanks Jimmy Leach
