Zues mates

I only know where 2 of them are.1 is owned by a local youth, coondog to the bone just not comp.hunted.1 belongs to Tater Harris in Cullman.2 went to Delaware as pups,1 to Miss.1 to Ga.They could all swim like a duck real young. All would bark at a cage coon at 7 or 8 weeks old.

Ive got some that started about 4 1/2 months out of Luckings Midnight Desperado. Out of the litter of 6 I know 4 getting it done now they are 6/12 months now.

Cant wait for kill season.

I find it interesting how many pups/litters are always turning the crank so hard at such a young age (not that I doubt any of this) ...but more often than not, therse early starters go on to become average coon tree'ers at best.

Why is that?

Like someone told me once. A good player in pee wee football isn't necessarily a pro prospect. The expectations of a 6 month old pup is just so much lower than that of a 2 or 3 year old dog. IMO a very young dog that trees coon is doing it 100% on instinct. To develop in to a more higher level dog you have the have the instinct, ability, and most importantly the brains and ability to learn to learn. If you get those three together combined with a lot of hunting by someone that doesn't mess the dog up too much, then you have the best chance for an above average dog.

My guess would be more than likely when they start early and are turning the crank the owner's hunt them harder than they should and they burn them out.

The one that I had that treed at 6 months and 3 days went on to be a real nice hound.

Gr.Nt.Ch. Scott's Crooked Creek Threat started about 5 months old. She was hunting by herself at 6 months old. One brother was hunting at 6 months old, and another brother started at 8 months old. One of her sisters started at 10 months old. She had two other sisters that I lost track. All of the above dogs made nice coon dogs.

Over the years most of mine have started between 7-12 months old.

i agree with you josh, that is why i am going to get a 1.5 yr. old female that needs a little work, so i can give my pup a break from me being over zealous.

And what makes you think you are overhunting your pup? I am willing to bet you the farm that anyone on here will tell you, more young dogs is never the solution to any coonhound related problem. If your taking on another dog, get a solid dog that you can at least take the pup with, not another "project".

Your " one trick ponies " don't take as long to develop mentally ... and conversely ..

A quick finisher means just that .. he's done learning , and if that happens before you even get a season or two under your belt .. it don't mean you know it all ... it just means you learned all you will.

A gourmet meal don't come out of the microwave ...

I dont buy into the "burnout" theory.

Its far easier to skrew them up than it is to burn them out....Or just maybe, some of the over zealous owners see somthing that was never really there to begin with.

I know there are exceptions, but EVERY litter is always OUTSTANDING before they are a year old...I think thats the piont where reality sets in.

i really dont have a problem with my coonhound, YET, only me pushing. so , therefore, knowing this, i am going to expand my horizon with another. without a "project" the world would not be what it is. just another adventure for me. gonna be good, and a good learning experience.
never said i was going to take the project out with the pup. assumptions. hmmmm. we all know what that word means.

No, but 2 projects means less time for each. Maybe you have enough time to do both justice now. At some point they should both take all your attention but instead they will get half and suffer from it.

I agree 100% I tell people all the time I'm a one dog man. I may go thru alot of culls before I find the one worthy of my time but when I find that special one its balls to the wall till its finished.

no but , for what i am paying for her, she is well worth it. and IF, i get her into shape, i have enough coonhunters that would take her off my hands if need be. she is already started and doing well, no need to convince all of you otherwise, been tossing up this decision for months.

I had an English pup out of Whittle's Sandman. He went back into Vanzant Sam. He was 4 months old when he treed his own coon. He ended up going completely upside down in his "teenage" years, about a year and a half old. Liked those bushy tail greys a little too much.

Kelley:

Tell me this, how many times have you actually been coonhunting? Since you are making a chronical from all of your hunts and the "first hunt" was less than a month ago, and I have seen only 3 chronical stories do you really think it is time to add another dog into the mix?? Apparently you already have "the worlds greatest mix breed pup trainer" and a pup that is going to "kick all our butts" so really, why would you need another dog when you go twice a week? Not trying to be mean to you, but just being up front. Unless you are indpendently wealthy, or retired, or hunt 6 hours a night, the two you got now should be plenty.

Have as many dogs as you want, feed as many as you want, hunt as little as you want, I don't care. I am trying to get your to see that maybe another dog isn't a good idea. BELIEVE ME this is not the only 18 month old dog that just needs a "little work" to be a great dog. Check out the classifieds they are sold everyday. Nobody gets rid of a young dog doing a good job for a "good price". Save your money on the dog and get some tools like a light, a tracker, a shocker ect.....For crying out loud, where you live you have like a month left of hunting before you are burried in snow, why get another dog now??

I have no idea why I attempt to help people with all the anwers. It just makes me dumber than them.
