I use to own a dog that has Lyme disease and he always will. About once or twice a year you would notice him being real lazy not wanting to come out of the box to eat or go hunting. The vet would give us some antibiotics and after 2 days he was good to go again. The dog I'm speaking about came from Conn and I guess the ticks will carry you away up there. We didn't know he had the disease when we bought him or we never would of thats forsure!!!
Thinking of Ehrlichia?
I just just lost a B&T to Ehrlichia - caused by ticks. I live in East Texas. Vet was unable to save her. He said the meds used for treatment are very powerful and are extremely hard on the dog's system.

My Gr.Nt.Ch.
was diagnosed 2 yrs. ago with 2 forms of Lyme Disease. One of them being ehrlichia. He was prescribed high doses of Doxycycline and he's doin' fine.Except for one thing. And I'm not sure if the disease had anything to do with it or not.His voice is not near as loud as it once was.Has anyone else had this problem?

I have had dogs with Lyme and Erlichia.None of them were the same after . In order for it to be treatable it has to be caught early. I have lyme disease as well it is no fun.

I have two dogs with Ehrlichia, the older dog was diagnosed with it at two years old; he was an extremely hard going dog, made NTCH at a year old. We noticed he was "down" a lot, and finally found a vet that could treat it. We were hunting him six nights a week and he was running out of "gas"; treated him with Doxycycline and rested him and he was good to go. The most important thing is to watch the dog; both dogs have "indicators" that precurse their slow down. The older dog, watch his eating habits, when he leaves food in his bowl, go to the vet immediately. The most important thing to do to avoid tick born diseases is to keep the ticks off of them. Use every thing at your disposal to keep them tick free and avoid the "slow down" and expense of treating the disease. Tom

vet told me that all you can do for the disease is put it into remission with anti-biotics like doxycycline.

ROB, THANKS. I WILL HAVE TO RESEARCH IT A LITTLE. I WAS TO THE VET EARLIER THIS YEAR AND I THOUGHT HE HAD TOLD ME THERE WAS A PREVENTIVE. I MAY HAVE MISUNDERSTOOD HIM.
LAST WEEK MY FRIENDS NT CH WAS DIAGNOSED WITH LYMES DISEASE. IT WILL COST HIM 50.00 A MONTH FOR LIFE OF DOG. ( FOR TREATMENTS)

yes this can be past from mother to the pup in the womb, there is no vacine for Ehrlichia, according to my vet. The best prevenative that I have found is the preventic collors or zema collors both collars parlize the ticks mouth part preventing them from biting the dog and transmiting the diesease. Frontline or other treaments will kill the ticks but do not prevent the dog from being bitten according to my vet the tick does not have to be attached to the dog very long at all for the ehrlichia to transmited to the dog. The preventic collors are a 90 day tick collar that most vet carry the zema is the same collar marketed by a different company and about $10 dollars cheaper.

it ain't the years it the miles that make me look this way
i got 2 dogs with ehrlichia. you can buy a tick collar from your vet called previn-tick (not sure about the spelling) we are run over with ticks in the spring. this is a 3 month collar, you will not have any ticks on your dogs. wont stop fleas just ticks. waterproof. this really works !! mine will never go another spring & summer without one !!
peopel get it to
and never recover all the way
there is a vaccine for lyme dease its suppose to prevent it.

THIS SHOULD HELP.
I WAS TOLD TO USE (OXYTETRACYCLINE) ONE TABLESPOON IN 5 GALLONS OF WATER FOR 30-60 DAYS. CHANGE WATER EVERYDAY. HOPE IT WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE. ( I AM NOT VERY HIGH IN THIS VET AS HE HAS STEERED ME WRONG A TIME OR TWO BEFORE.).

Best thing to do is have them on a tick preventative treatment. Then you don't have to worrie about it. It's also a lot cheaper to prevent dogs from getting ticks than it is to treat a disease. I use a 10% permethrin from the farm store. Just spray them down and rub it in. You can also use Front line or the other high dollar preventatives.
