Can a coonhound do both?

We have a friend who is training his Black Mouth Cur on squirrel and Frank took Tori with today just for the exercise. She showed major interest in the squirrel tracks. Can a coonhound be trained to tree squirrel by day and coon by night? I know the Curs and Feists can be cross trained, but can a coonhound do it too? I think it would be awesome to have a hound that could do both.

Any thoughts on this? Both positive and negative.

I have seen a couple that were nice cooners and great on squirrel...I have been told some dogs have trouble differentiating between squirrel/day and coon/night....but starting with a smart hound with the desire, and some work I dont see why not...

She liked the squirrel tracks, but the coon poop was the first thing she rolled in, lol, she loves to chew on and roll on the coon drag at home. She seems very smart and eager to please, might be hope, huh?

in the old days, almost everybody started their coon dogs on squirrel..... it was pretty common to go in the late evening and squirrel hunt til dark, then coon hunt the rest of the night......

u don't see it much now days........ there r still a few that start their dogs on squirrel, but no many......

I would say your biggest problem would be early in the night, like soon after dark. You would probably get some trees with squirrel nest/holes. Lots of slick trees by the look of them.

I remember in the old days though, most of the realy good cross trained dogs treed squirrels by sight and coons by scent though. I dont remember have much of a problem with them treeing on squirrel trees at night,,,,,,,,,,,,,thats been along time ago so it might be just my bad memory.

I personaly never started dogs on squirrels. Always found a few live traps to be the best pup trainer around.

Dual purpose hounds

When I was a youngster (a couple years back), my dad and I hunted with a man named Gene Hooper and his boys. Gene was from Arkansas and always had a hound that would tree squirrel and coon. We had a nice English female that was tops both ways. I remember that first year of legal squirell hunted (12 years old), I nailed each squirrel tail to a very large Willow tree in the back yard. By the time November came, it was covered. If I remember correctly, we had 114 tails on that tree. Oh yeah, Mom really loved it! lol

My english female is a natural on squirrels, but sometimes at night she'll tree where there's a lot of red squirrel activity...jsb

Hounds.......

Some hounds make very good squirrel dogs, I like to start mine on squirrel and once they start treeing good then start hunting them at night on coon, and as a dog gets some age on them they know it squirrels during the day and coon at night.

Thanks everyone...we are gonna give it a good try anyway. Heck, she may never make a good comp. dog that way, but it should would be fun to hunt on squirrel/coon with a pup from my breeding.

Some dogs hunted on squirrel will tree red squirrels feeding at night. Depends on if you want to walk into some slicks on a moonlit night. Good luck with your dog.

Thats how i start all my coonhound pups,on squirrels.
