Pup Prices ?? Are you kidding me?
I know it cost a lot to raise pups. Gas, transport, stud fees, etc,
But 750$ to 1000$ each for a weaned pup is ridiculous!
Some say well its an investment, heck yeh it is and a RISKY one at
that.
Try to sell these same pups at 10 to 18 months old and you cant hardly give them away.
Just my opinion.
They are high. I blame obama. LOL.

pup prices
If a breeder has aline of well-known & well-bred dogs in the pups pedigree and he is able to get what he is askin' for-----can you really blame him? No one is twisting anyone's arm to buy one. So,i really don't see what the problem is.I paid $1250.00 for a female pup last summer. It was a cross that I really wanted a pup out of.Ya know what?I worked my butt off to save and have the money for her.

$1000.00 PUPS!
I SHOULD HAVE GONE WITH WALKERS!
Seriously though, a pup is worth what people will pay. Chances are if someone pays that much they will give a pup more than a fair chance.
I'm no pro, and will never claim to be. It's not business to me, it's a hobby. I'd just be happy to put pups in the hands of people that will give them a fair chance in the woods. If I'm breeding it's for what I WANT, and like most people I can't do entire litters justice.
Tully, well said...
I firmly believe more dogs are ruined and never given the proper chance than the number of dogs that "just don't have what it takes".
Yep, it takes a heck of a dog to be true head turner and win big consistently etc....but, it don't take nothin special to win locally and get titles...it takes a coon dog...but, don't gotta be a super dog...and if the dog got the instinct to tree, I believe there's a reallllly good chance of it making atleast a mediocre coondog...I can teach a poodle to scent trail...breaking dogs is also easy enough most the time....so if they tree and will stay treed, there's real hope imo....
Guys that will pay 500$+ for a pup are lookin for good dogs and will put the time and training in to give that dog a fair chance...
My trackman litter is "competition bred" as id say...I want them to goto competition hunters...I want them to get a fair chance...the breeding is there imo...I wanna see the results...and, when buying/breeding to dogs like trackman, etc..all the famous well known big name dogs, I feel you owe it to the breeders and to the dam and sire and ancestors to give the dog the absolute best shot at being titled....giving the dogs the titles they deserve and comparing my dog to others and seeing what is out there is why I competition hunt....I feel obligated to get the dog I'm running the highest title it can get on its own.....

I think people want to much for pups. But you get what you want. If you want to spend $50,000.00 for a Mercedes instead of spending $30,000.00 for a Ford or Chevy. You may end up with one you can drive the rest of your life or you may end up with a lemon. Just like buying a pup. You may get the next world champion for $150.00 or it may cost you $1,000.00. Take your pick and take your chances.

The biggest problem I see is people pay these prices and don't want to admit it when the pup doesn't turn out. You end up with a lot of mediocre coon dogs behind good handlers and next thing you know there's a new stud dog or high caliber female with pups for sale.
A dog that can tree a coon can be made a grand nite champion if put in enough hunts. I think the pup prices still go back to the age old tradition of wanting to own the best. Why buy a Mercedes when a cheaper Chevrolet would give you the same ability? People won't notice the stud with local backyard no title ancestors but the all grand big name ancestors do get noticed. Why do you need a 3/4 ton deisal power house with a $800 diamond plate dog box to hunt out of when a beat up Toyota with a home made wooden dog box would do the same thing? Because different people like different things. It is a gamble anytime you buy a pup no matter what it is out of. That is why most pups don't come with warranties and vehicles do. You can get parts to fix a car or truck and make it work right, you can't do that with a dog so take the risk and spend a $1,000.00 on a pup or $150.00. Either way, if it doesn't make anything your out of some money. Just depends on how much money you are willing to gamble with and possibly lose.

I am getting 100 dolallrs
a peice for mine out of my ace dog i guranteed theywill keep up with those high dollar pups
For those acting like it doesnt cost anything to raise a litter of pups to 6 weeks you must have not raised any pups lately.
I did the math on breeding my female this spring and even with a free stud fee I was going to have around 800$ in the litter by the time they were 6 weeks old. Considering I wanted to keep 2, stud owner wanted one for use as a possible future stud she would have had to had 7 pups, 4 that I could sell for 200$ a piece just to break even.
For people paying the cost of high stud fees, superstaking the pups, performancing the pups, possible cost of AI for semen they probably are lucky to break even at 500 to 700 a pup unless they have 10 or 12 pups to sell.

your right, breeders can charge what they want, and it does cost to raise a litter. but it does not cost 1000 per pup. the only thing i can say about sticking your neck out there and paying big bucks for the pup. make sure your getting a dog from a good quality female. and remember there are CULLS. look at the % of these top studs. 15 to 18 % hmmmmmmm. there are LOTS of culls. i just had a 1200 dollar cull come through my place. 1200 at 8 weeks, and 18 months later, you can't give him away. he is out of an all grand cross. sent him to a trainer, got him back at 12 months old, with the "he just don't have it". could not give up on him, hunted him till 20 months and NOTHING. guess what "HE just don't have it.

pup prices
I get 100 - 200 a pup. I am not trying to make a dime. I actually lose money. I make a cross when I want something. I will give pups away if a kid just wants a pup. If people aren't gonna put em in the woods it doesn't matter what they cost you will never see how the litter will turn out. The biggest problem I see is if a pup is not treeing its own coon at 6 mos old it gets put by the wayside. I raised a litter that is now 11 mos old. 4 of are running and treeing. The others that I have kept up with haven't been in the woods but a couple of times and are not doing a lot. If you buy a pup it has to have woods time to see its potential. I know all pups don't make it, but without time in you will never know. Just because a dog has not been to big hunts and promoted doesn't mean he is mediocre. It just means his owners couldn't make the big hunts. I realize there are dogs that got undeserved titles, but that's not the case with all. I live in Northwest Louisiana and our biggest hunt within 250 miles is the LA State Hunt. My Loggerhead dog has won it or placed in the top 5 more than once. Does that count for anything.

Well said! If they dont go to the right hands, it dont matter what they are. I have raised plenty of pups. And done the Harry semen thing, bred to the top studs and all that. I know what it costs. And I also know the results. If I can break even on a litter, I will take that everytime. I have given away more than I have sold. Thats the only way to make sure they get into the right hands. Your right, they are worth what someone is willing to pay, I just aint going to pay that crazy prize. I have done so in the past and never had one to turn out. My point I guess is this. Buy the pup for 1000$, raise it up and train it. Chances are if its not a dud its pretty mediocre and you will be lucky to get your money back. Just sit back and buy a nice started pup and then you will know what you are getting. Its just crazy I guess to see these guys blow these pups up like its the cross of the century or something. Like they are the only ones that have every raised a good pup.
** most of the successful breeders have one thing in common and its not their great insight of knowledge of the breed
** they just got lucky and happened upon a really good reproducing female. Yes,just by luck. and that female put them on the map.

Puppy prices are expensive! My Dad has been breeding the same line of walkers for twenty years and because we dairy farm, When we have a litter of pups normally we just give them away, And it's not because we don't have good dogs, My Dad say's if he can get rid of them by six weeks old they won't cost him anything. So we give them to a guy who gives them to good homes and we keep the pup that we wanted! and who knows you can go out and buy a pup for $900.00 dollars and that pup can get hit on the road! It's just not worth it!!!
