Expensive puppies!!

Let me start by saying that I have nothing against anybody charging what they want for a puppy, grown dog, truck, house, and on down the line. if they can get someone to pay it then go for it.

However I was thinking, How much were these great dogs we see winning all the big hunts and making grand night champion sold for as puppies. I don't have any world beaters, Grand Night Champions, etc. yet.

but I think it would be interesting to here about some of the great dogs people on here own and how much they cost at 8 weeks old!!!!

150 bucks now worth 2500?

I got mine from charley adkins for 150 bucks at 8 weeks old. He is a great coon dog i dont comp hunt but i have had poeple offer all kinds of money for him so they can comp hunt him. Ive had as much as 2500 offered for him when he was 2 years old, now hes 5 and i still get poeple offering me money for him every now and them, i dont ever price him to anyone cause i know theres gonna be someone outt here that might just pay it and id be out my best dog ever.

It does help to sell your dog if it has a great set of papers. My buddy had a all-grand Trackman male that needed one more win to be grand nite that he was offered a large sum for. My pup isn't all-grand but he sure enough acts good and couldn't be more happy with him. He's out of all reproducers. A lot of dogs winning out there today were average priced pups.

Joe's numbers are only right if everything goes right. Ya don't even want to consider when things go wrong. Out of the last 3 females I have bred, 2 had to be spaded. Not only did I suffer monetary losses, my breeding program suffered almost to extinction.

A breeding program is not for the faint of heart and selling puppies is never a quick get rich scheme. Well, not unless you are breeding or selling lap dogs or rotts.

I would bet that it is around $200-$300.00. Personally, I would rather give pups away to particular people then sell them.

I did not intend for my post to seem negative towards you or any one else who sells puppies. I'm apologize if I offended you or upset you.

I completely understand the monetary cost and time associated with raising puppies and I do not believe that you (or any other person) who cares for the puppies the way they should be gets rich off coonhound puppies if they factor in their time.

I do admire your record keeping and wish the farmers I worked with would keep detailed records like you do.

Again, I was not trying to bash 3,4,5,1200 dollar puppies or those who breed and sell them. I'm sorry if it came across that way. I have paid 150 dollars for a puppy and 700 dollars for a puppy and was happy and still am happy with both purchases and would do it again.

I was just curious how much people paid for world champions, grand night champions, dogs that win the Grand American and other big name hunts when they were 8 weeks old.

I'm just not sure that the general public understands the expenses involved in raising a litter of pups.

I do most all of my own vet work, worming, vaccine, etc...so I shave some expenses there.

I would suggest to you that the price of a puppy is no indication of the value of that dog. As a breeder, all I can hope to do is to provide you with enough "clay" to mold and shape a coon dog. If I do my job, the when you pick up that puppy at 12 weeks old (yeah, I keep mine that long to make sure that they get all their shots), you now have the ingredients.

It's what you do with that puppy from the time that it's 12 weeks old and you declare it a "finished" dog that dictate the value. If you put time into it, by the time it's say 18 months old, and treeing coon every time out....and you enjoy it...you still have 8, 9, or maybe 10 years worth of enjoyment.

Consider that going to the movie, buying popcorn and a soft drink for a couple hours of entertainment will set you back $20.00 or more....sounds like a $300.00 pup is one hell of an investment!

Cornell was 500.00 but he was also TRACKMAN's third litter wasn't too famous yet!!Have been offered 50,000.00 but I think I'll just keep him awful hard to find one just like you like them!!

I think you have just as big a chance maybe a better chance getting a world champion out of some ones hush hush backyard nondegreed breeding program as you do a known all grand cross its just what a guy wants. And also what he expects to sell it for when finished. Ive raised pups for $150 dollars that was worth 1 $2000 when finished and I also raised a $1500 dollar puppy off of trackman and lexy that had a first place $110 and 2 final four finishes in the trackman invitational by 12months old that I turned down $5000 for at twelve months. Shes not any better than the other pup just worth more.

Now I have to register them. Litter registration with UKC, $20.00 and another $25.00 for litter nomination. PKC registration is $7.00 + 3.00 per pup...total of $37.00 Throw in another $20.00 for AKC litter registration, plus another $50.00 for the AKC performance type program.

Now in paperwork alone I have another $152.00.

I have spent a total of $932.00 out of my pocket for this litter of pups...that does not include any cost for my time, vet checks, oh....almost forgot about shots.

10 Doses of Parvo: $49.00 + Shipping
25 Doses of 5 way $149.00 + Shipping

$198.00 for shots....

That brings the total to $1130.00 out of pocket expense for these 10 pups. I have $113.00 in them, not counting incidental expense of keeping momma, the kennel, electric etc.

So what's "expensive"? Would you rather have one of those $50.00 pups that have only UKC papers, have never been wormed at six weeks old, don't have any shots?

I keep pretty careful records of my expenses, and let me tell you at $300 to $400 dollars a pup, I'm not getting rich!

You cant turn a poodle into a world champion coondog. It has to have some breeding behind it. I would say these guys that are always carrying coondogs either are buying well started ones that are showing promising signs or going through quite a few pups. Even in the best breed pups not all are going to make it no matter who raises it. But just my opinion that the better breed pups have an advatage. Problem with this question there are to many variables to argue either way just a bunch of opinions

My one Grand Nite "Ruby" I paid $100.00 for her and know that was a great deal and she was basically gave to me by a good friend!

I think Joe hit on some thing there The best dog I have owned was sent back to the breeder because he would not do what the man wanted and claimed he had every chance in the world I took a chance on that dog and hunted him three nights and bam he was a dream come true, some people think that the first time out a hound is going to go and win the world ,but get thier bubble burst when they find out that you cant leave it in the pen for a year and it become a coondog over night.

The one thing I have noticed is you can almost tell if a dog is ready to start the first two or three times to the woods.

As far as pup price goes I think $350 is more than fair.

Just think of it this way how much more is a started dog going to cost you?

I think that is a market that only the Walker people have relized the price of. There is no way I am going to hunt a dog put alot of time and effort of breaking various handling aspects and starting on coon and sell that same dog for puppy price; if a dog runs and trees it is worth $500.00 min.

yeah that brings back my old memory it was Roman blue girl. I like that buddy dog Charlies got its always seemed to get out there and have one by himself. I bet i walkled 2 or 300 miles going to that buddy dog with Charlie back when he was bout 4 or 5 years old and them WV hills back in mason county aint no joke neither
