However I was thinking, How much were these great dogs we see winning all the big hunts and making grand night champion sold for as puppies. I don't have any world beaters, Grand Night Champions, etc. yet.
but I think it would be interesting to here about some of the great dogs people on here own and how much they cost at 8 weeks old!!!!

Obviously, you don't raise many pups either....
Did you know that it's tough to sell pups that are not in the super stakes? Did you know that the yearly fee for a super stake sire is $800.00. The performance program is $100.00 a year. That means just to be able to nominate a litter, I've already got $900.00 invested.....
Divide that by 10 pups, that's $90.00 bucks a pup right there. Pups are not even born yet.
Now I have a female, I have to keep her year round, there is some expense there. Let's say the stud fee is $300.00 (pretty cheap by today's standards), I have to take a weekend and drive to get her bred, let's just say that costs me another $300.00 in gas and lodging.
Up to $600.00 expenses. Litter is born, now I have to worm them, feed them, house them etc. A litter of 10 pups will consume about 150 pounds of puppy food by the time they are six weeks old....it's 30 bucks for a 30 pound bag...another $150.00. Lets just for the sake of argument say that it costs me $30.00 to worm them every other week for six weeks, starting at two weeks old.
Total up to this point
$300.00 for stud fee
$300.00 for breeding trip
$150.00 for feed
$30.00 for worming
Already I have $780.00 in this litter of ten pups. Not too bad you say?
Now I have to register them. Litter registration with UKC, $20.00 and another $25.00 for litter nomination. PKC registration is $7.00 + 3.00 per pup...total of $37.00 Throw in another $20.00 for AKC litter registration, plus another $50.00 for the AKC performance type program.
Now in paperwork alone I have another $152.00.
I have spent a total of $932.00 out of my pocket for this litter of pups...that does not include any cost for my time, vet checks, oh....almost forgot about shots.
10 Doses of Parvo: $49.00 + Shipping
25 Doses of 5 way $149.00 + Shipping
$198.00 for shots....
That brings the total to $1130.00 out of pocket expense for these 10 pups. I have $113.00 in them, not counting incidental expense of keeping momma, the kennel, electric etc.
So what's "expensive"? Would you rather have one of those $50.00 pups that have only UKC papers, have never been wormed at six weeks old, don't have any shots?
I keep pretty careful records of my expenses, and let me tell you at $300 to $400 dollars a pup, I'm not getting rich!
