have a male hound that is decent on accuracy by himself. put him with a slick treeing male and he will go on to find the coon, but if you put him with a slick young treeing female he wants to pull up short with her. he never has bothered a female on the tree (he knows what that will get him). what is a productive way of stopping this, short of beating him half to death in front of somebody elses young hound? that don't go over to good with some folks.

this is a hard habit to break on a dog. i hunted as good as there ever was and that was his only hole. he would fall in love on a cast. he would just be there standing around when we got there. put him with males and he would show out. didnt do it all the time but every now and then he would. tried everything and never broke him. good luck

mine does seem to "fall in love" with one particular female on any given hunt. everytime you cut him he will be with that female. he does usually seem to have good taste most of the time. he does not just stand around. he will tree his heart out like he is trying to impress a young girl like a teenage boy.
if a male trees and the coon is there he will tree with him, if the male pulls up short he will trail past him like he is not even there.

Beating them half to death under any circumstance isn't productive but switching them is and a switch shouldn't bother the other dog too much.

It's easy to bust a dog from EVER covering if that's your thing and it's not real tough to correct a dog from slick trees if it has a decent amount of brain power and sense but breaking them from covering slicks without breaking them from covering at all is one of the toughest, if not THE toughest training challenges we face. Atleast in my opinion.

Separate

Don't hunt em together for a while. If he knows how to tree a coon let him do that. Some males develop a quirk with certaim females. Call it what you will he is budding with her. I have seen males do this with certain females before. Hunt them separate and see if he comes put of it. If not you need to switch her and make her go on from that tree and maybe she will realize the track didn't end there.

it usually only happens when he is hunted with a female he does not know, like on a cast. if the female belongs to me I will send her on fom a slick tree and give him a little extra boot because he knows better. he is not paying attention to where the coon went, just trying to show off in front of the female.
I agree on the "beating half to death" comment not being productive also. that is usually the answer some people like to give and I did not want it. I don't mind my hound backing another one on a coon if he does not have anything going on.
my hound did back a young female on a possum last week, don't think he ever checked to see what she had treed. just joined in because she was. the little female had just started treeing, so I did not want to do anything negative around her ( she belonged to a friend). I did manage a little nip from the tritronics on him. odd thing is, that was only the second possum my hound has ever treed in his life. first one he was 7 months old, he is almost 6 years old now.
