it usually only happens when he is hunted with a female he does not know, like on a cast. if the female belongs to me I will send her on fom a slick tree and give him a little extra boot because he knows better. he is not paying attention to where the coon went, just trying to show off in front of the female.
I agree on the "beating half to death" comment not being productive also. that is usually the answer some people like to give and I did not want it. I don't mind my hound backing another one on a coon if he does not have anything going on.
my hound did back a young female on a possum last week, don't think he ever checked to see what she had treed. just joined in because she was. the little female had just started treeing, so I did not want to do anything negative around her ( she belonged to a friend). I did manage a little nip from the tritronics on him. odd thing is, that was only the second possum my hound has ever treed in his life. first one he was 7 months old, he is almost 6 years old now.
