Hyper Dog
Ive got a male that is nearly 2 years old and he is extremly hyper! I thought that he would grow out of it and he still may but its very aggrivating. When i go huntin for about the first 30 mins 2 an hour he runs around like a manic untill he wears down a little bit then he will go hunting. What i have been trying to do is take him out of the pen and put him on the chain for about 2 hours before i go hunting so he can calm down some. It helps a little.
Another problem is when i get ready to go to the house he is a pain in the rear to catch unless weve been hunting for a few hours and hes wore out. Ive tried shock collars to try to make him come backbut that just makes it worse. Its more like he will come back when hes ready to come back rather than when i want him too. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what to do about it? I look forward to your advice. Thanks
How did you work wit the shock collars. I have always put mine on a long lead (100 ft or so) and call them, if they dont come i shock them till they statr coming and then I let off. And I do this untill they get it through their head that if they come to me it doesn't hurt. If you just shock them in the woods cause they wont come it makes them run away.
long rope
i would get a long rope and work with him in your yard, with the shocking collars. he cant get away from you then.
it works.
You can try to shock the ambition out of him if you like, but i wouldnt. Hunt this young dog about 6 hours a night 10 nights in a row and your problems will be solved. Soon as he learns coming to you doesnt mean hes gotta go home he will start to handle better. Good luck. John
personally, i teach my dogs to come before i start hunting them hard, i also use dog treats, my dogs like bread, and i give them a little piece when the do something right, weather its coming to me, sitting when asked, treeing their first couple of coon, anything that i like, until they learn that im pleased when they do certain things, i have a 6 yr old redbone that will come when you call her, sit, lay down, bow, and beg when asked, i can call her off a tree, unless she can see a coon and then its a pain in my rear to get her off but yeah, she is also kinda lazy, cuz she weighs about 90 lbs but is starting to lose some weight but she is still a great "keep the coons/cats off the porch" dog
i also have a 4 yr old rottweiler that comes and sits, he's a good home protector (from bears anyways, he likes people to much to be mean to them) good bear dog though
i also have a hyper puppy (18 months old), she likes to play fetch, so i found some old tennis balls and play fetch, she isnt so good at bringing the ball back, but i keep her on a leash, mainly cuz she likes the chickens (as lunch) and is getting better, she also plays w/ my rott
