-- Curled tail pup ? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=461832)
Curled tail pup ?
Bought a couple of pups sight unseen and the guy sent me one that has a curled tail. Anyone have any experience with correcting this other than removing it?
why would you remove it? some pups are born with it, usually genetic. I've had old guys tell me that meant the pup was gonna be mean, but I never saw that in one. It doesn't affect their hunting so what's the big deal?

Old folks just would not hunt a curled tail pup. I dont like them either........
it doesnt mean anything, it just happens... but as for it meaning that the pup was going to be mean, I have seen it but I dont think it was anything more the a coincidence. leave it

I have a redbone female with a curl in her tail she's not mean and has become a good coonhound the good thing about it catches the electric fence and trains them to stay out of the cow pasture

My grandmother raised German Shepherds when I was growing up, and had a litter that had curled tails. The vet broke the tail and put splints on them while they were little ... you couldn't tell that they had a curl when they grew up. It is genetic, but doesn't mean anything about being mean, that comes from mean dogs in the pedigree, that probably had straight tails!

Have you talked to the breeder about sending the puppy back?
If you don't like the pup you just aren't going to give it your all, which is half of what makes a dog. No use in cruel treatments to try and fix a cosmetic problem for the owner and no problem for the dog itself. Call the breeder and send the puppy back or sell it so it can go to a home that will appreciate the pup and want it.
If the tail makes the dog in your mind you should have told the breeder it was a defect you weren't interested in receiving when you initially purchased the pups to be sent sight unseen. Otherwise the breeder wouldn't have any idea it was a deal breaker in a pup for you.
Not everybody is picky about looks. Unless you are clear with the breeder with things you absolutely do not want, I don't know what else to say.
As for a lot of the old timer crap, a lot of it is just crap. I've heard about every little 'physical' assumption myth proven wrong. I've seen hunters choose pups or not choose pups for some really stupid reason 'tail curl or straight' the way the butthole is shaped, tight foot or coon footed. Selected pup because it had more black in its mouth, etc. Yet seen people come back with some undershot bites and other severe structure issues that created issues when young with health or inability to hunt hard or keep up with the pack. But, it was a perfect pup because the butthole shape as an old timer told them so.
Proper structure, good health, and drive go a lot farther in a good foundation of a pup. The rest is just personal preference of the owner.

One of my best dogs has a Curly Tail. It can go straight, but she just prefers to curl it. When she has a litter, I'm keeping the pup with the curliest tail out of the bunch. It may not represent the standard, but I like it.

If your not showing the dog, what does it matter? I would assume your not considering you bought the pup sight unseen.
Iv only owned one curly tailed dog and it was a small built female and she was mean as hell to other dogs and people lol like I said iv only owned one so its probably just an old sayin but it was true in my case

Hey Starplott. I really appreciate your input and am quite overwhelmed by your intelligence on this subject matter. If only I had known that you had a PHD in curled tail syndrome and were a psycology major as well, I definitely would have contacted you before I ever made the post. Heck, in hindsight had I been aware of your expertise on canines as well as Homo sapiens I would have saved myself alot of time-aggravation-money-typing(I hate typing) and negativity from some know- it- all that I don't even know. If you would permit, I would be honored to be able to contact you prior to any future endeavers or decisions I may undertake as it pertains to the world of canines in general. I hope this doesn't offend you in any way for that isn't the intent . However, my response to your negative response on my post should have been YOU'RE RIGHT and that would have made you feel better. This may very well be a cry for help on your part. If it is I certainly hope you receive it. I hope you and yours have a Happy Holiday!
I personally will keep a curled tail pup for myself I've had two and my buddy had one only ones that I've been in the woods with they all made great coonhounds and stayed with us till old age got them

Not planning on removing it.(I'd have to name her Bob) Was just wondering if anyone had any experience with this. It's really not that big a deal. I would just prefer a non curled tail pup that's all.

Now,now Starplott let's keep it clean women and children are on here from time to time. You've so thoroughly convinced me on this subject to the point that I'm actually feeling guilty and am considering trading the non-curled tail for one that's curled . I just realized what the power of persuasion can do. I'll try one more time YOU'RE RIGHT STARPLOTT. P.S. You may want to grab one those counselors, psychiatrists you work with and spend some quality time with them if you know what I mean.
I know she's a woman. I'm hoping she outgrows it. The pup that is.
This thread just got funny! You guys brighten my day with your witty banter...LOL!

it's just coincidence. There are mean dogs with straight tails too. can't predict the disposition of the dog by the appearance of the tail. that makes absolutely no sense.

I would like to personally thank Starplott for saving me 3 grand. After careful consideration, not only have I decided to swap my good tailed pup for a curled tail one, so that I'll have a matching pair, I've also convinced my wife that our teenage daughter doesn't really need braces. I personally don't think she would be any sweeter with straighter teeth. On second thought, I may have to reconsider, for she has been a little on the mean side lately. Now that I think about it, heck, I'm going to get off this computer and see if I can straighten out my wife's tail.
anyone got pics of a "curly tailed coon dog"????
im curious now as to what the curl looks like that y'all are talkin about...
cant say i ever seen a straight tailed one?? lol we hunting pointers or coon dogs???
2 of the trackman pups we kept seem to have a curled tail...but maybe not as curled as y'all mean?? id like to see pics.....they both also have a weird flare of hair on the end of their tails..i thought that was a bit interesting...

There are many different shapes for dog tails: straight, straight up, sickle, curled, cork-screw..
Hounds should carry a Sickle Tail to a Stright Up But should not Break over the Top line to a Curl ..
For Some Reason Some of mine Break over the top line and I don't like the Looks and its something I'am working on ..
This Hound Breaks over the Top line to a Partial Curl
Arlis

Red Hammer Breaks Way Over !!

Wondo River KONG had the Perfect Hound Sickle Tail

As you can see in this pic all the Hounds are in a Natural State and you can see all the Tails in Sickle Form .. Except for Tonka in the Bottom Right that has that "The Coon Went That Way Tail"
