Some hounds do that with age, they catch more on the ground or just learn they can get up on the coon faster by shutting up. I would think genetics play apart too, how did the sire & damb do it?

Jess Myers,
yeah he'll never come out of that its not always a bad rhing like tonight we were hunting near cliff they kept running the coons in the cliffs or in holes a silent dog will be up on them before they know and theyll clime a tree for him. some locations a silent dog can make lots of trees other dogs cant. but me i like to hear one too so its give and take but i dont think you can get one to start back barking on track
SILENT DOG
SMARTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I THINK A DOG GO'S SILENT BECAUSE HE GETS MORE FUR IN HIS MOUTH THAN PULLED OF DEN TREES.WHEN IM HAVEING TROUBLES TREEING COON WITH MY OPEN DOGS I TAKE OLD JOKER GETEM EVERYTME.

I have one that likes to sneak up on them with a long bawl then a hard chop. I have another one that's wide open but they had better be moving because he will move in fast with a dying bawl then chop. Sounds like you have a little older smart dog that won't change.
well- i dont know your dog - i cant say if he got smarter or not -
--ive had a silent dog go wide open - do you supose he got stupider - lol
i have seen dogs go silent because of an ear problem -
most likely its genetic-
I have a old dog that's silent by himself. He'll open a little when I'm training pups and opens every breath in stange company...dont know why but he's been like this his whole life.

would be nice to pull up in some of these sub.throw
a silent dog out track it out & tree it.
my female black dog is the same way. it seems if i knock some coon out to her she opens more on ground. but i like her tight mouthed and she trees alot of coon on the outside.

I have had soem that were real tight up to two years and then just seemed to open up. And by 3 they were open trail dogs. Can't explain it. But with age you never know.

I HAVE A OLDER DOG HE WENT SILENT ON TRACK ALMOST QUIT BARKING TOOK HIM TO VET THEY FOUND OUT HE HAD A HEART PROBLEM THEY PUT HIM ON BLOOD PRESSURE MEDICINE STARTED BARKING ON TRACK AGAIN. THEY SAID HEART CONDITION WOULD MAKE IT HARD TO BARK WOULD WEAR OUT EASY.
I have a tight mouth female that will run silent in the warm months and Spring or Fall she opens up more on certain tracks.

quote:elvis, i have noticed the same thing. when coon season comes around, they tend to use less mouth later in the season.

ive had dogs that were naturely a bit titemouthed that would go completey silent if i gave them too many coon.
I cant tell you why,all I can tell you is from experience that i figured out if I didnt give them a coon for several nites, they would start opening on the ground again.
granted,I think they were all from the same line and it may not work with all dogs, but I thought it mite be worth a try.

use to be a lot of spring creek dogs that way.
tight on the ground but you could load the gun
before you went.
2 of the last 3 trees my dog has been on there was no trail barking just tree now unless she hit the trail at the tree or was tight on ground i dont know...ive only killed 2 out to her this year and that was cause she treed them in our barn or in the yard
some dogs are just naturally tight from day one....the ones that are normaly open will tend to tighten up when there hunted down and killing alot of coon. then theres some that are just plain noisey no matter how many are shot out to them...
