I cant tell you why,all I can tell you is from experience that i figured out if I didnt give them a coon for several nites,they would start opening on the ground again.
granted,I think they were all from the same line and it may not work with all dogs, but I thought it mite be worth a try.
elvis, i have noticed the same thing. when coon season comes around, they tend to use less mouth later in the season.
