northern indiana coons rutting already?

here the past few days we have been having real long tough tracks either to a den or to a tree with multiple coons. the way our dogs are acting is how they do during rut in January. just seeing if you guys are having the same deal going on!?

I'm finding the same thing here in MD. Had two tracks last night, both over a mile. First coon was a boar, second one not sure, left it set. But it went a looong way and was at the very top of a big oak tree submerged in about two feet of water, so i'm guessing boar. Maybe a coincidence. I'll let you know if it continues next time out.

They are not rutting, the boars are not even swollen yet, meaning they don't have the hormone surge that causes rutting activity.

Personally, I think they are migrating BACK to where they came from. Pretty sure that during this summer's drought the coon migrated to areas that held water....causing an over population of coon in some areas and a void of coon in others.

The kittens were all born "early" this spring due to an unusually mild winter last year, so you are seeing litters that are still together, but are larger than what you would expect cause they are older.

Trust me, the rut IS coming...but it's not here yet.

Its been rough hunting this whole week for us.Not sure if it's the weather changing from one extreme to the other, frost coming down early, or the fact i hunt black dogs lol.

If Queen is having trouble treeing coon.....it's a bad night! Many nights in the woods with her, and she will get em bushed!

Well guys it has been the same here in Iowa and I think Joe makes a good point...I never thought of a mild winter and dry summer changing the way coon would move, but it makes since.

She treed 10 in two night thursday and friday. Saturday she wasn't acting right sunday didnt eat. She has been at the vet since monday. The lump on her neck had doubled in size in three days. One vet told me it was a tumor 4 weeks ago this vet said it was where something had got in there had a ton of infection. Which Cobles had it cut out once before a year or two ago.So all i been hunting is a young dog out of her and trouble.

Tracks here ha e been long but almost always on the outside when treed. Been frosting early here but coons ha e been moving pretty good. Ha e only treed one double since leaves came off.

Joe has hit this one out of the park boys,,,,Squirrels migrate and so do coon,,They go to the easiest food source .

Did the figure out what the infection was caused from? I have a buddy that sound like the same problem. He has taken him to the vet sevral times and had no luck and recently took him and had it cut out and didnt find a thing.

There was a track in there like sonething was or had been in there thorn, stick, or ect. Which it was on her neck so the collar would of hid it from plain sight.They said findong the item would be worse then finding a needle in a hay stack.

One of the coon that we treed last night was a male and he was swollen. He did appear to be in "rut" mode.
THis last spring I treed a kit a full 3-4 months ahead of schedule. The coon are definitely changing their habits around here. Several mild winters in a row....

Not sure how things are in Indiana. I was out earlier this last week and treed 17 in 3 hours. Only one double. Granted this is a woods that only gets hunted twice a year, (deer hunters own it) but its a nice woods. Never had any long tracks. It is only about 300 acres, we only touched about half of it.

been hunting creeks and dry land with huge timber even some of the timber with creeks and good food source isnt reproduceing the coon it should. Coon r not in rut. We hunt a thicket last nite with no water reproduce more coon then the ones with good food source with water. We been avageong 7 to 10 coon a nite. Been also been hunting tri county state land tree 20 there in 3 nites

gestation periods stay the same length no matter how nice the weather. kittens were born early because their parents bred early. their parents bred early because they had an early rut. they had an early rut due to unusually mild weather. those of us having unusually mild weather can expect early ruts, breeding and kits again.
I killed the second boar in one week that showed signs of rutting.
say what you want about the coon in your area, but in the part of MN that I hunt the rut is starting.

I don't know if you think I'm "stupid", or if the literal value of the written word is getting in the way.

Yes, gestation periods are the same, however breeding success during the initial heat cycle of the females is driven by weather and accessibility.

The biggest problem around this area lately is a near total lack of ANY activity of the coon population. Not the fast and furious activity of the rut....They have been denned up and not moving at all.

joe where u hunting? Been been treeing 6 to 8 a nite. Yes been getting some den and wholes in the ground just in the last two days iv treed 19 on the outside

It's been rough around East Central Indiana too. I made 5 drops last night, treed 4 den and only one coon. Tracks have been very short too. Coon just arent moving good for some reason....

EVERY coon (even the yearlings) we have treed is HOG fat...no need to move a lot.
