How many?
Love to hear a good deer race ( be nice guys) lol
Most I ever heard last all of about 2 min until they burn it out of hearing. That's listening to other peoples dogs of course "mine never run deer" "NO SIR" LOL
To many deer in my area to let a dog run deer. Some nights I see as many as fifty deer. My dogs will run fox some.lol
Do coonhounds actually run deer? Why I've never heard of such a thing. Well I've never met a man that had a dog that would run a deer, only long legged non-tree climbing coons. Except for mine.
i always felt a deer race was a waste of time.
Last weekend my young dog ran one for about 2 hours my old collar wouldn't reach out far enough and she kept on crossing the river about the time I got close. back to the truck and drive 5 miles back around to the other side walk in same thing few times of a .75 mile walk I had enough finally caught her went home and orders a good shocker! Wife ain't happy bit I need it lol
Me and a buddy was running beagles one day and we got to talking and before long we were hearing the best race we ever heard. I look at him and say u know that ain't a rabbit right he said oh yeah. I said leave em alone it sure sounds good. A little while later we walked over the hill and there was dogs and deer running everywhere lol.
I don't want mine to do it but I don't mind It a bit on a cool fall night with a good cup of coffee hearing sombody else's dog do it lol !!! Don't tell me any hound man don't like to hear a good race like that.
If I'm standing on a old log road with a shot gun full of 00 on a cold crisp day...yes I love to hear a good deer race...
deer
How do u actually no when ur dog is running a deer. I mean when u dont see it. Just wondering at what yardage should i shock my dog
Jmiller, yours' is a good question and I never knew for sure until it was too late. I figured if they run hot, straight away it was a deer. But that's not true becausse if they get after a doe with young one they run differently. I don't worry about it now because my dogs have started running fox and i've learned that hearing them run is more fun than looking for eyes that i'm not going to shot. The dogs love it, and they get worn out. they also get faster and better. i don't like running deer because they can run too far. I've seen deer hounds run across the county.

if its my dogs a running deer i dont like it,somebodys else dog running deer i feel sorry for them cause they going to be up all night trying to catch them.
Re: deer
quote:i wouldn't go by yardage. your best bet is to see the deer. yea that's not easy but that's best. if you no u have a deer problem with a dog. find the deer were u can still hunt coon even if the dog doesn't run the deer u seen, and set him up for a lesson. shock him on the lowest setting possible that will get his attention. if it takes a little more juice don't panic just crank it up a small amount more till it gets the point across. do this till he passes them deer up to find a coon. most dogs will need rebroke off deer when hunted with other trashy hounds. just because they wont run them when hunted alone don't mean they wont run deer when hunted with company.

you got about 3 barks to make up your mind and then he is gone
I know of a couple pups that have ran em. Down and caught em. Now that's a deer race.Id cull the ones that couldn't catch one.

I hate to hear mine run a deer but I love to sit back and listen to someone elses run a good deer race.
I don't mind pups running a deer for a while as long as they quit it and come back. I hate it when they run a deer for .7 to a mile only to pull off it and get treed and then I have to walk all of the way into them.
Deer Race
Just last week at B&T Days I was sitting around camp bragging how I've never had a dog run deer. Then I entered my dog in the Pup Derby that night, we had a full cast of deer dogs by the time it was over.

I was never big on listening to a deer race, any dog worth its salt would be out of hearing PDQ. I still love to listen to a good fox race though. usually the "circle" is all, or most all, within hearing and you can listen to several rounds till it finally holes up somewhere.
as for "how do you know when", experience teaches you to know. a good houndsmen can just about tell you when his dog stubs a toe, let alone what game he/she is running.
