Do coonhounds actually run deer? Why I've never heard of such a thing. Well I've never met a man that had a dog that would run a deer, only long legged non-tree climbing coons. Except for mine.

Jmiller, yours' is a good question and I never knew for sure until it was too late. I figured if they run hot, straight away it was a deer. But that's not true becausse if they get after a doe with young one they run differently. I don't worry about it now because my dogs have started running fox and i've learned that hearing them run is more fun than looking for eyes that i'm not going to shot. The dogs love it, and they get worn out. they also get faster and better. i don't like running deer because they can run too far. I've seen deer hounds run across the county.

i wouldn't go by yardage. your best bet is to see the deer. yea that's not easy but that's best. if you no u have a deer problem with a dog. find the deer were u can still hunt coon even if the dog doesn't run the deer u seen, and set him up for a lesson. shock him on the lowest setting possible that will get his attention. if it takes a little more juice don't panic just crank it up a small amount more till it gets the point across. do this till he passes them deer up to find a coon. most dogs will need rebroke off deer when hunted with other trashy hounds. just because they wont run them when hunted alone don't mean they wont run deer when hunted with company.

I hate to hear mine run a deer but I love to sit back and listen to someone elses run a good deer race.
I don't mind pups running a deer for a while as long as they quit it and come back. I hate it when they run a deer for .7 to a mile only to pull off it and get treed and then I have to walk all of the way into them.

Deer Race

Just last week at B&T Days I was sitting around camp bragging how I've never had a dog run deer. Then I entered my dog in the Pup Derby that night, we had a full cast of deer dogs by the time it was over.

The key words being "good"...I have to admit, it sure sounds better when it's the other guys dog.
But wouldn't you agree that a poor deer race is no fun at all. We used to have this fella that would come to every hunt the local club had. He hunted blueticks and his had to be the ones that coined the word "booootick" or "booootickin" because absolutely every time he turned one loose it would start a track and spend the entire nite, "booooooooooo"............"boooooooooooo"..................."booooooooooooooooooo" I swear to god 20 minutes of that would get this dog about 100 yards maybe. 2 hours later pretty much anyone has had enough.
It wasn't just a matter of everyone wondering why anyone would feed something like that...it was more like "why drive 4 1/2 hours down here, pay to enter it in a hunt and then spend two hours showing everyone else present that you got nothing?????" In the 10 plus years he came to the local club he never won a single cast, never got a single plus point and never saw a single coon. Here's how bad my luck is, I probably drew out with him way better than half the time he came to a hunt.

I was never big on listening to a deer race, any dog worth its salt would be out of hearing PDQ. I still love to listen to a good fox race though. usually the "circle" is all, or most all, within hearing and you can listen to several rounds till it finally holes up somewhere.

as for "how do you know when", experience teaches you to know. a good houndsmen can just about tell you when his dog stubs a toe, let alone what game he/she is running.
