The Garmin ALPHA was 40 years to late!!

Just think what the ALPHA would of and could of done to change coonhunting as we know it today, if it would only have came out 30 to 40 years ago.

Instead of turning your LIPPER pup loose and hearing it bark about a mile in that direction and then in five minutes hearing it bark a mile in the other direction only to wait a few more minutes and it would be running in another direction. You think some of the old timers would of figured out something was up and would try and correct it. Might of only had 2,000 pups instead of 5,000.

Instead of listening to your COLD nose dog work a track all over the side of the mountain you would look at the screen and see that instead of it taking the track everywhere it was only going back and forth on the same track. Instead of cutting another log for the fire, you think a switch would of been cut to correct the dog. Better yet a button pushed to let the dog know to get off the same track it has been going back and forth on for an hour.

John Wick could of probably wrote two or three more chapters for his book, and maybe would of never owned a cur dog. (Sorry John, I just had to throw that in).

All your dogs that quit tracks and came back, instead of thinking how the coon went in a hole. You could of marked the spot and found the dead possum.

All the trees you cut down to get the coon out of, you could of marked and known where to get firewood from for the winter.

Instead of listening to your buddies dog take a track across the mountain wondering where your dog was. You would know your buddies dog was running your dog.

All those hard hunting dogs that would make a bed as soon as they were out of your sight could have been exposed instead of bred to for that go power in your pack.

Just think of what could of been done with all the Knowledge that Garmin would have brought us and the amount of poor genetics that could have been eliminated from our dogs.

OK, I am bored. Waiting for my Grand Daughter to get here so we can go out and play with some dogs. I want to take a video of a hard tree dog today (if I have one) for that other post. I just hope my Grand Daughter gets here before noon, dogs don't tree as hard in the heat of the day.

No we won't be there. My next trip is to the Spring SS but that is only to have a couple dogs hunted there.

Great post Bruce, i can remember a few from the past that i would round up the next morning sleeping on my coat, and a few that would have for sure made better dogs with some well timed correction.
Have fun with that grand daughter.

Same thought

Just wondering why some hunters STILL make excuses for their dogs while using the Garmin.

Funny thing is. I had the ideal that a tracking system should show you a picture of where the dog is back 30 years ago. But I had no idea of gps. Things sure would have been different.

AMEN, Bruce

Lost a couple I would sure have liked to have around longer & had a few dogs that fell in your other areas!!! Got a 'beep beep' in early 80's & thought I was in heaven, but now never use it. Take care, Ron.

I would like to add a few.......

..........you may have found out that dog you said you could hear treed a mile could only be heard 685 yards if the crickets were not chirping..........

you also may find that the dog that always hunted so deep traveled by road as soon as he hit one......

enjoyed reading mr bruce

This ole timer could have hunted another 10 yrs if we had them when I started in the 60's.

Now that's a bummer knowing I won't be around to hunt those perfect hounds in forty years.

Don't think I could even cut a dog loose now with out one now. Use to never think a thing about cutting loose with nothing but a name tag on. But it's sure does help knowing just how a dog is hunting and working track.

Don't get me wrong I love my garmin, but I think in some ways I knew my dogs better before I had one. I used to follow every step they made. Needless to say we didn't make a lot of excuses for dogs after walking all night. Now I must admit I am a little lazier nowdays, if I don't hear the dogs I just look at the screen. I have noticed a trend of people not really knowing their dog or what he is doing, by their bark.

I'm with you on this. I'm trying to break myself from looking at the screen so much. Just listen to the dogs and enjoy the hunt.
