Smoky River, old Hammer, etc.

He was a reproducer for sure.

He marked the breed without a doubt.

Chief was mostly Smokey River, with a touch of Hammer. Warren Haslouer said he was the best reproducer since Diamond Jim. I owned half brothers/sisters to Chief. They didn't all make it, but the majority (by far) did.

I have a lot of Chief blood here, showing Chief several times in three generations. There are several others, on this board, with a lot of Chief blood in their hounds. There is frozen semen available from a few of his sons. There are a few (very few) grandsons/granddaughters around. If you're wanting Chief blood, it shouldn't be too hard to find. If you haven't tried it, I don't think you will be disappointed. Most of them are balanced hounds; good strike, good trail, and good tree dogs. Most of them have good mouths. Good luck!!!

chief

Mostly Hammer?

Thanks for clearing that up Craig, now others can look and make their best interpretation.

Always liked that Diamond Jim blood

Mr. Edwards. Ive owned a few and seen a few dogs that showed chief 3 times in 3 generations. they all had terrible noses and the majority had weak mouths, have you seen this? 2x's seem to work out well

I owned a Nt.Ch. female out of Chief that had a weak mouth. The majority of the one's I've had possessed average, or better than average mouths. I do know of some that were tight on the ground, and one of the biggest faults I have seen was, several dogs out of Chief had seizures. The seizures were genetically transmitted.

I'm no expert on much of anything.

But in my opinion, the big thing Chief brought to the breed was heads up, one bark tree dogs.

Chief

Owned a daughter of Chief- NtChGrCh Dot that we raised Shipshiwana Sis thru Sheppards' Fred dog from- that was a big great looking female, just like a male dog would look like. Had a good mouth & a 1 bark tree dog. She also had the seizure issue. I thought she was dead for sure the first time it happened & 15 minutes later she would be standing up ready to go hunting. Take care, Ron.

the seizures come from the hammer blood lol

I owned one hound directly out of Chief. Gr Nt Chiefs' Joe. Joe was a hard going tough hound. He absolutely hated coon. Run his mouth more than he needed to in competition. I believe several sired by Chief was that way. The hounds I have hunted the past 20 years have Chief blood on both sides of their pedigree. If not the best female reproducers, close to it, Mailes Rudy Sue & White River Sugar both Chief daughters is blood I prefer. Gr Nt Mailes Pete one of the best reproducers ever, was a son of Sue. Gr Nt Mailes Rattler also a Son of Sue is one of the few Gr Nt grandsons of Chief still living.

I had an awful nice son of your old Joe dog, Dennis.

If he hadn't been a little worse to chew than I could tolerate I would have kept him till he died.

He was one of the most natural coon treers I ever raised.

Gr nt Lucy was a nice hound out of Joe. Lyonel Charles has a Nt ch male from Joe. A littermate to Lucy. Buck will be 13 years old next month.

John, it's tough finding the coon treeing hound with no major faults. Chief has brought the blues a long ways.

I purchased a young male from Gene Wolfenbarger that was sired by Chief and his Speck female. I called the dog, Ranger and he made a pretty fair hound but was a little too coon crazy for me. He absolutely went crazy and got this wild look in his eyes when he smelled a coon, was a little scary. To prove my point, he broke his own neck while shaking a coon and had to be put down. Though he never did it, I always suspected that he might bite someone when they tried to take a coon away from him.
I bred him to the old Fly female I purchased from Dartez Brumley (heavy Vaughn breeding) and raised one pup, a female I called Mamie. Mamie was a natural coondog and easy going. I will never know how good she could have been as I lost her as a three year old. This was the foundation of the dogs I have today.
Adios,
Gary
