what do ya'll use in your whelping boxes in the winter time?

my female is getting ready to have pups in the next few days...there is 10 inches of snow on the ground and it is reaching temperatures below zero....I have her in the basement as I speak in a dog crate until she starts havin them. I was just wondering what is the best thing to use in your whelping box this time of the year? it is warm down there, but still a little chilly. this is her 3rd litter so she knows what shes doing I just want to make her as comfortable as possible and i want the pups to be okay....
any suggestions would be great!!

If your dog is fat,you aren't getting enuff exercise!

I have torn up several news papers & put in whelping box
as long as they aren't in any draft they should be fine
just replace the paper as needed to keep clean & dry
A few yrs. back one of my females had a litter 3 days old
the temp dropped to 20 below 0 don't know what wind chill was
they were outside in a warm bed with just a small cloth over opening. they faired fine.however I wouldn't reccomend it.

We have raised lots of beagle pups and always used straw and never had a problem at all. So unless coon dog pups are different that beagle pups then they will be fine with straw.

ive always used hay ,it is a little softer and seems to retain the heat .just keep it dry.use a heat light in a corner with a way that pups can get under it and the female cant. i build a box for the heat bulb but i cant explain howto do it with out drawing it out . the pups will be drawn to the heat and will stay away from the female . you will raise more pups because the female wont have a chance to lay on them .

Bedding can sometimes cause a female to lay on pups. They cant feel them under them as well "I believe". That and .65$ will get you a can coke.

I will use a heat lamp or some other device to give heat before I use bedding while whelping. After they are a couple weeks old I might put in bedding instead

I have been using a heat lamp for 15 yrs. The best you can use!!!

where you live a can of mountain dew at circle k down here cost you 1.06$

Short haired carpet is the best .... the momma is gonna eat everything soiled and roll away the rest to make a nest.

The main thing is having her away from drafts and in a box that will hold her body heat ... give her that and she'll take care of the rest.

6in of dirt with a light bulb on, i raise them in dirt yr.round, damp in summer and a little lamp in winter.

I've used low pile carpet like this for several litters. Note that its anchored down with little blocks of wood with a screw run through them. Otherwise, with carpet or anything else, the female will rake it all to the side if its not tied down somehow.

It was in single digits as these pups were being born. I've got a heat lamp in the box and varied between 125 and 250 watt bulbs for the first few days to keep the temp 80-85 degrees. I also used a heat mat (not show) to keep the temp up. I like the heat lamp because its easy to tell if its working and makes looking the pups over easier.

put down newspaapers whole newspapers then tack indoor outdoor carpet over the top of the newspapers and change as often as it takes to keep them dry the newspapers are good insulation and will soak up urine.
the reason i use indoor/outdoor is it's cheap to buy dries out fast and the pile being short wont hang up the pups nails
