I've used low pile carpet like this for several litters. Note that its anchored down with little blocks of wood with a screw run through them. Otherwise, with carpet or anything else, the female will rake it all to the side if its not tied down somehow.
It was in single digits as these pups were being born. I've got a heat lamp in the box and varied between 125 and 250 watt bulbs for the first few days to keep the temp 80-85 degrees. I also used a heat mat (not show) to keep the temp up. I like the heat lamp because its easy to tell if its working and makes looking the pups over easier.
