If you don't want a Garmin get a Marshall or a Quick Track 6000.

Garmin. I live in southeast Ky myself and have had one for over 2 years. I will not turn my dogs loose with anything but a Garmin and I havent ran a wildlife collar alongside the garmin in 2 years.

Signal bounce is bad in the mountains with the beep beeps and you dont have that problem with the garmins.

Do you just lurk on this board waiting to bash anyone or anything positive said about the Garmin??

He asked for an opinion and I gave it. And no I don't have any problems with my garmin. Had the handheld since May 2008 and bought my first DC-30 in October 2008 and then bought two more, the last one in the summer of 2009. Haven't had any problems with them either.

Jamie, you stated on another post that people don't know how to use a compass properly.

Well if they get lost because they don't know how to use the compass is that a problem with the compass or the user?

Same thing for the Garmins. 99% of the "problems" they have are operator error.

Sometimes it's not, but the great majority of the time it is. Maybe somebody is trying to track 3 miles with the handheld instead of using it properly and using the roof mount. Maybe somebody forgot to turn it on, or didn't know how to calibrate the compass, or didn't understand to use the map feature instead of the compass when in close. None of those things are the fault of the equipment.

No different than someone that doesn't know how to line a compass up on a map, or know how to take proper bearings with it.

By far the great majority of people DO NOT have problems with the Garmins.

good point, dually noted

If hunting in the mountains with a beep beep style I prefer the Johnson collars. The signal is not as over powering as say a quick track or similar collars and doesn't seem to bounce. JMO

Garmin is the best thing since sliced bread!!!!! But!!!! if your dogs can get more than a mile away better run a Beep-Beep collar on them as well. Ninety percent of the time I can keep up with my dogs with only my Garmin but the other ten percent I have to break out the old Tritronics to get back under them. I am working several young dogs and sometimes they get "confused" and bump a goat or coyote.
