im pretty sure it been a law here in wv for as long as i can rember if ole game warden catchs you ytying to get a animal out of its den you in big trouble

Very funny

I cant believe how self rightoeus some of you are and how you put the den on a pedistal and treat it like it is pandoras box. Around my country we use terriers to rip the fuzzy little buggers out of the ground and out from under hay stacks and in buildings. I call coons and have shot them when they come out of the den hole. Guess what sometimes they make it back in. You can bet they get wired or cut out. Now maybe it is not a great idea ethically to be destroying every den you find. What i do a lot of the time when i find a good den to call is cut a tappered hole with a chainsaw. That way i can put the tappered block back in the hole and seal the den. Ive took coons annually from these trees for quite a while. Argue all you want about ethics but around my country coon are vermin and have no season. I can kill them any time of year i like. Now on the ethical side of things and also just the common sense side of things ... I Irarely ever kill a coon within 5 miles of my house. I trap nuisance coon Iall summer and turn them loose in my honey holes. Also my old dogs will make hundreds of trees all summer long and never get a coon shot to them. Even pups only get one or two a summer. But come hide season away from the house and where farmers want them gone, every single coon that gets treed or caught or cornered is gonna die. And im gonna trap em and im gonna call em and im gonna sic my terriers on them in old barns and house and im gonna run em over with my truck. I was laid off last winter and coon hides put food on my families table. This winter i dont need the money near as bad and im not near as bloodthirsty and my kids arent hungry so i just mostly pleasure hunt. Try calling coons sometime and you will soon learn that one den tree doesnt belong to one coon and it is not his house that he sleeps in every night some trees i call have a different coon in them every time i call other might only have.one living in them every few years. The den is not sacred there are far more places for a coon to sleep then there are coons in the woods. So finally cody, do what you are comfortable with and what is legal in your area and most of all have fun and dont let no man get you down. You have a god given right to provide for your family and do what makes you happy. Good luck and god bless you buddy.

I think you misunderstood. I very rarely kill a coon in those areas near my house. They are my honey holes where I start my pups. Anytime I hear of a neighbor having trouble with a coon I go live trap them if possible and move them from their farm groves to the timbered valleys that I hunt. I have a standing offer out with all the farmers I know in the area, I will pay them ten bucks for any coons they live trap and give to me. They think I use them for training and then kill them. I use them in a roll cage with pups for a day or two then I turn them loose in the valleys. If I dont have any pups that needa cage coon I just turn them loose and give the farmer back their trap.

P.s. Very few of the farmers will except my ten bucks they are more than happy to give me the coons.

Now that I think about it it does kinda sound like im full of sh!t and probably a little crazy too. The problem with common sense is it sure as heck ain't common enough

i agree kay lol. i have to say ive done alot worse than cutting a dentree down when i was in my teens, in fact now that i look back i was stupid bout a lot of things lol.

When I was 18 I treed a den on a Mountain, climbed it an looked in and saw the coon, tied the dog walked off the mountain to find an ax at an old barn, only found a pick, climbed back up the mountain, picked a hole in the bottom, built a fire in the tree, smoked the coon out, shot 2 quick and the coon fell back down in the den, set there a minute and the coon came running out and jumped, ran 50 yards and went in a hole in the ground, thought about going for a shovel, but I was give out.

i spent a 1000 dollars on my first coondog 200 on a rifle 500 on dog box 500 on a tracking unit traded trucks hunted hard that first year killed about thirty coon "this was in 1993" skinned them all out as best as i could with my uncles help stored them until season was over took them to a fur buyer and they averaged 5 bucks a piece that taught me not to kill coons also lol "save em and tree em again"

Your grandpa cut den trees during the depression in order to survive. Survival is a whole different situation than cutting a den cause you think your dogs deserved it.
Any young man that can walk a mile and a half, wade a river, chop a hole in a tree, carry a coon,gun,hatchet,light, and lead a couple dogs back out across that river, can dang sure hold a part time job at a fast food joint and make way more money than he can coon hunting.
Oh, and your PS leads me to believe you are probably in the same age group.
Ive said all Im gonna say on the matter of cutting den trees.
