was that the first coon you ever treed? you must have been pretty hard up to cut a coon out.

cutting den

good way to make sure you have no coon to run in the future. We used to see alot of that back in the 80's when they were worth 50.00 each. Would never even think about doing such a thing.

good job man, im glad to hear you got him. i had one two nights ago that ran a long way. hoge oak with a split in the limb. it would have taken a lot of cuttin to get him though.ill kill every coon i tree too, unless i can tell it wont make 26. im 30 years old but it still pays for my dog food. keep killin em buddy and dont ever apologize for it. not everybody hunts just to listen to dogs or to try and make a name in the hunts.

I won't ever criticize someone for killing every coon they tree during kill season but robbing den trees is nothing but flat out poaching.

this time of year im killin a lot of coon in dens but laid up on the outside. trappers set snares all around den trees, along with traps in culverts and anywhere else they can snag one. i dont condone cutting down deen trees by a long shot. nor do i support cutting holes in all the trees to try and kill a coon. when i was young though i would go to great measures to get one. my dogs werent good and i was learning. this young fellow is getting started in hunting and wants to get some hides. who the hell cares if he cuts out 1 coon. i bet it made his night to get that thing. he was happy and put a post about it and people attacked him. thats rediculous. its 1 coon. i did lots of silly stuff when i was young and id lay a $100 bill on the line that most of you guys have also.

if a coon made it home he is safe in my book. dogs should have pushed harder to get him on the outside. when i was younger i pulled a few out of dens....and my dad taught me a serious lesson on that ouch. back in the 80 hides sold for good money, but no amount is worth the ethics of the hunt. yes dragging dens in poaching in most states.

I used to do it some in the late 70s- early 80s when I had a young dog turning it on and couldnt find it on the outside, we'd climb the tree and look in the hole and if it was there shoot it and use a big treble hook with 80# line to get em out.

but we didnt tell about it much..LOL at 18 years old you could be doing a WHOLE LOT of things much worse and when you do cut a chunk out of a den put it back in as it'll grow back when the sap comes back up on some trees.

my grandpa that raised me was born in 1904, raised a family during the depression and when the dogs treed whatever they'd chop, dig, smoke or do anything it took to get the critter. back then if you were able to find work it paid at the most a dollar a day and a big mink was worth up to $30... so......

What this fellow did was alot better than any trapping. His dog at least earned it. I wouldnt do it myself but one coon out of a den tree isnt the end of the coon population. Hell ive shoot em out of pound tubes, dens, attics when i was his age. Plus dont tell me that shooting everyone u see is better than geting one out of a den for a young dog. Killen coons dont mean much to me anymore so i dont do any of the above things anymore but i think he caught a lot of grief for one coon.

I carry a dang hatchet big deal get over it i got the coon that.me and my dogs worked hard for I've been crippled half this year due to falling out of a tree coon hunting broke my back caved in my chest and completely shattered both wrist and finally getting a few coon again feels good! I got to walk out of the woods that night with a smile instead of getting flown out in life flight

Cody
Take some good advise and dont cut anymore den trees to get a coon.
Not only do those den trees insure you will always have coon to chase in the future, if you get caught cutting one it will cost you a whole hunting seasons hide money to pay the fine and possibly lose you hunting privelages.

Shame on youns that are giving him an attaboy for it. Yall know better.

Good posts guys. Is it as bad to take one out of a den as it is to kill coons to keep ur comp dogs greased in the summer? Because I know everybody has done that.

yeah your right he hunts the way he wants to but with all the antis that watch this board he just gave them more fuel for the fire by admitting he is cuting holes in den trees to get the coon.dont know about his laws in his state but in iowa its against the law to cut den trees.

Cody, the big deal is you don't post it on a worldwide message board. How you hunt and how you conduct yourself in the woods is your business. You post it on here, you just made it everyones business. You wanna rob dens, keep it to yourself.

HERE IS MY THOUGHTS ON THIS

#1 WE HAVE A YOUNG MAN WHO HAS NO GUIDANCE ,THATS WHY HE FELL OUT OF A TREE AND DARN NEAR KILLED HIMSELF ,
#2 HE WANTS TO BE ACCEPTED SEEMS LIKE BY THE COON HUNTING WORLD

CODY YOU CAN DO AS YOU WISH BREAK THE LAWS IF YOU CHOOSE BUT AS YOU NO BY NOW SOME TIME THERE IS A PRICE TO PAY ,
I SEE YOUNG MEN LIKE YOU IN THE HUNTS ALL THE TIME WITH A CHIP ON THERE SHOULDER NOW IM NOT TELLING ANYONE WHAT TO DO BUT REMEMBER WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND, MOST OF THEM NEED THAT CHIP KNOCKED OFF ,

NOW YOU CAN ASK PEOPLE WHO DRAW OUT WITH ME MOST WILL TELL YOU IM A FAIR MAN CALL IT THE WAY IT IS ,
GOOD LUCK JUST DONT PUT SOME THING LIKE THIS ON A PUBLIC FORUM
