Feed experts

Dang I never got an acknowlegement much less an answer to my question about listing not only crude protein and fat and source but to my question about listing Digestble Protein and fat and Total Digestible Nutrients. Is there no expert here or is everybody just guessing and "feelin good" about thier feed.
I know what I like and it is Diamond if I can get it . The boys at the feed sto look out for me> When they screw up and bust a bag they sell it to me for half price unless I can tell they done spilt more than half of it then the price gets more in my flavor. LOL JMO . I have fed EA for 10$ for probably 35 dogpound and Lamb and Rice for 10$ for 30 dog pound and I yet don't see a nickels worth of difference in it and old yeller bag Maintenance thank you.

Well I suppose no one can find it on the internet or dream a little dream about it i.Lyle. That must be the reason.

My own opinion on this would be, every dog food company keeps all that secret, kind of like Coke's formula. They don't want you to know what your dog can actually use and what just sounds good. JMO!

Very true statements in and of themselves. I guess it just depends on what set of eyeglasses one is evaluating through.

Be just fine with me to feed Yellow bag Diamond Maintenace from now till at least November if not year round. By the way what is the Digestible part of the Nutrients in the bag that you think so much of???????

Since the dogfeed cooks are going to keep it cloudy, then why don't you put something in front of my eyes to see.. I feel good enough withought having to joinup with a hallelujah chorus of band followers.

My take on it is this, I have tried several kinds of food. Black Gold, EA, pride, sportmix, and some purina. My dogs did good on Black Gold but my local person stopped selling it and I had a dog that got sick and wouldnt touch BG. I had been feeding Ea before Black Gold when I had one dog. I switched trying to save a little money and still have a good feed. Well after my dog wouldnt eat it, several friends were feeding Pride. It did good for their dogs so I tried it for a few months. Never seemed to get my dogs to where I liked them far as coat and weight wise. Dogs were healthy as far as worms etc. Same thing with Sportmix. Was feeding up to 6 cups during the winter trying to put a little weight on. Nothing would do it. I finally said well I am gonna go back to EA since I had good results before. I wasnt trying to save money anymore. I just wanted my dogs to look good. I started it, my dogs love it, I feed 2-3 cups less depending on weather. They are muscled up and filled out but not fat. Coat and skin is better. I dont know what it is or saying its our gift to dog food, but it flat works for my dogs. If you can feed Diamond Yellow bag and like it good for you. Feed Ol yeller I dont care. I dont clame to know about dog food. I just know it does things for my dogs these other feeds havent. It evens out price wise and I am happy, my dogs look good, I can drive 8 miles to get it. This is my EA story and thats all I got to say about it. Im not a scientist or claim to know whats what in the food. It is just what my dogs needed.

Randy,

I told you I would try some EA and I just finished my first bag. (I'm on my second of the D. All Nat Chicken and Rice.) So far I like it. I have to add, I don't know if it's the weather or the feed, but my dogs seem to just go and go these days! I like the price. I like the feed. Clean up is good as well.

I have nothing against Purina, I have fed it for years. Altho the last two bags I opened had large chunks of matted feed in them. I returned them to where I bought them and exchanged them for the Diamond. I will still buy canned Purina tho....

Thank you for your insight!

I have noticed since Purina ONE went to the new 'Smart Blend' that it has some little chunks of what seems to be shredded food. I would not say they are 'matted' but they look different. I have not seen any Pro Plan lately to see if it looks that way. I don't think it's anything to worry over. Just something extra for the dogs to enjoy. My experience with Purina Dog Foods has been good. The $7 checks I use when buying a bag make it affordable. Also Sams Club has these little exta discounts they apply to some things at the time of purchase. I have gotten an extra $5 off Purina dog food twice in recent weeks. That probably is done by Purina as well.

No sweetie .... this was ProPlan Shredded Lamb and Rice. The chunks were 5 X 5 inches. They were as big as a softball. Since they use corn, it scared me. That's what happened to Diamond when they had the scare before. Thats why Diamond went "Natural" no grain, corn, etc.

I paid almost $40.00 a bag (30 somethin' lbs. ?) That's a lot to throw away. I'm trying this for now. Purina has raised some fine dogs for me over the years! I am not knocking Purina in anyway!

I'd be interested on hearing what you have to say on this topic. I have my own thoughts on it that go a little beyond the kcals but I like to listen to others experience, especially when they weave a comment like you can.

Posted by l.lyle on 03-10-2011 11:18 PM:

You are way ahead of me when it comes to kcal method. I tried to learn(is the best way to put it) blending feed rations using the Crude, Digestible protein and total digestible nutrient TDN method. But again why don't the dogfood bags list kcal? What they list is practically worthless as to figuring out what is the gas milage you get out a bag. I recon they already have "certified organic" dogfeeds somewhere and somewhere people will buy it cause it makes them feel good about it.

So I think we agree . Seeing is believing. Whatever brand or feed source anybody uses they might as well not print the ingredients , just look at the dog and be sure he looks good and hunts hard enough to suit you.

Posted by CSnowgren on 03-10-2011 11:41 PM:

I don't think the kcal is fool proof either. Especially if vegetable matter and meat/flesh is contained in the same formula. ph levels and acids required to digest them are in stark contrast to one another. I am of the opinion that based on this alone, dogs have a very hard time and ultimately fail (through no fault of their own) in their ability to digest them to the point of maximizing the kcals. The cheaper the formula, the greater this problem is magnified in my opinion. I have no hard proof of this other than it being my opinion, so anecdotal at best.
