The female I got now when coons are moving trees them all around you but on a bad night she will drop in a mile before you can blink and she ain't coming back. If you try and hit the come here button she will just lay down right there and you still got to go get her. Her momma was worse that's what got her splated on the highway. I don't like it old folks need a dog that handles I can't blame nobody I bred them that way.

One mile one coon don't suit me.

Like I mentioned before there not the most enjoyable pleasure dogs, they have faults just like all the rest but they have a plus side as well. If you don't think so wait till you draw one and you'll find out.

The rules of night hunts are the only thing that make them useful. Take leash lock out of the rules and just recut the dog that is treeing coon and you will tree many behind deep and lonely. I’m not saying that this is right or wrong, I’ve owned both types and enjoyed both types but the leash lock only helps the deep and lonely dog.

Only one kc has no leash lock and they have hunts in a lot of different states with no problems. I have hunted under those rules quite a bit and I can take a 25 strike and 125 tree and hold my own with ole mouthy , deep , and alone. The other two kc's will not change the babbling rule or the no leash lock because they will loose customers because those hunters would loose their advantage.

its suppose to be a coon treeing contest.. when dogs are on leash .its not a coon treeing contest then.. just who can walk the furthest in one dump. I have been beat by the deep and by the close.. rather walk close toem.

Nobody ever said .6 was deep I said some had to get that far just to find a coon hot enough for them to run and bush not that it was deep.

Meaning lack of nose or tracking ability.

Like I said above, some are deep and alone and can do it all and are top notch hounds.

Some are deep and alone because they are sorry track dogs and take all night to half way run a track or struggle to get on treed and they have been trained to get away from everything so they don't take 25 tree.....

I was just making the point that there is more than one reason a dog is alone all the time.

I didn't mean for this post to be about deep and alone but about exceptional track dogs. Sure titled it wrong.

How many of you who want deep and alone dogs hunted before tracking collars of any kind were available? My guess is if you'd been around in the days of NO tracking collars or shock collars you would have a different outlook than you do today. Have one of those dogs in mountain country with no tracking device and you wouldn't keep it long. Especially where coon are moderate to thin in population.

Yes this style of hound wins a lot in the hunts. But these types of dogs TREE coon a high majority of the time. Most are just as accurate or more accurate then a top notch track dog. Everyone hating on this style of dog but you notice when one comes up for sale they don't last long and they ain't CHEAP.

Understood, but if not for comp hunts they wouldn’t be valued is all I was saying. Why walk 1 mile to look at one coon if you could look at 4 in that same mile? I’m just stating that the night hunt has made them popular. I have owned both types and liked them both when I had them. I will say that on any given night one type or the other has its night. You can’t prove by me that will win more then the other. A lot of variables come into play

In a lot of instances a dog that try's to be alone to a fault pushes them away from the coons to be treed !

This is the issue and the Garmin has allowed this in the night hunts. A dog that out hunted his mouth was useless in the hunts and pleasure hunting before we were allowed to use tracking systems during the hunt. I blamed this on the tree count down in another thread but the more I've thought about it, the tracking system being used during hunt time is the real culprit.

Dead and alone

Had very few, over 50 years, they were hard to beat, but out of pocket here, means possibly dead and alone on the road. Deep to me at least One mile or more.

Deep

The Garmin dog is what we call them but without the new tracking systems it would be tough to turn themoose in man places

I agree 100%! They are a product of the hunt and I do believe without the Garmin this style of dog wouldn't be nearly as successful! Hard to call a dog when you can't hear it don't matter what the Garmin says!

My garmin says my dog is treed in the dog box !! That's an old wife's tail I had it tell me my dog was treed when my dog was close and not barking.

I don’t like ole deep an lonely either. But I can handle ole babbling first strick deep an lonely with his own coon vs babbling first strick me too with some of my coon with 4:55 gone on the clock.

HAHAHAHA
Technology has changed everyone to some degree .

I remember a young man with as good of a dog there was at the time who made the top 20 at the world. Ive always said if he'd had a garmin those days he wouldnt have been beat often and prob made the final 4 if not win the world.
when his dog barked he was treed , super accurate and didnt take long to bush em but would get deep if needed. Totally silent ,,,,,, some cant even imagine what its like to NOT KNOW where ol silent is at without that face glued to the screen lol

Garmin post

Since this has turned into a Garmin post to some extent... Why wouldn't you use your Garmin in a hunt? It gives you a direction to listen, A direction to walk when its your 8 minutes and dogs are on the lead, and gives everyone the ability to try and hear their dogs. Why would you want someone to just not know where their dog is and just be gone? Me personally I was someone to beat me by treeing more coons not beat me because their dog is in the next hollow over and I can keep them from hearing them...

I agree 100% and it doesn't matter which side of the scorecard I'm on judging or not. But I use my Garmin as a tool 100% of the time. I still have to hear my dog and anybody who trees their dog off their Garmin is an idiot and we all know that lol

I don’t competition hunt but I know I wouldn’t keep a deep and alone dog...I am talking about one that runs that straight line for a mile and then strikes a hot track...a good dog should get out quickly and their nose will tell them pretty quick if they need to go deeper...or if there is decent scent in the general vicinity...then it shouldn’t take long for the dog to find the hot end of the tracks...a good dog shouldn’t take long to do this...

It seems to me the type of dog I am talking about is what everyone should want...maybe not???
