You hear this a lot and I understand the value of a dog like this but what I really want is one that can and does take the track away from the other dogs and has it treed before they know which way it was going. Have seen only a few and owned one. Lost her in a cave at 2 years old.

Tom most of us old folks call it having a run away. A dog can travel in a strait line running the edges in the openings and get deeper quicker. Than a dog that covers its ground thoroughly as it goes. If they are independent in thin coon country they are hard to beat.

Tom I haven't seen a fast track dog in a long time . I mean one that runs off and leaves the other dogs and makes Mr coon climb a bush or catches him on the ground . I would like have one more fast track dog but were would you find one at.

I have one, Dual Gn Josie, seen her tree coon 75 yards from turn loose behind 2 NtCh that was struck at 100 an 75 an over 200 yards deeper, scored her coon, cut to other dogs and she take the track and get treed with 125 on there coon, I have a 14 month old female out of Josie an Waltz Kingpin that is showing the same capabilities.

I think it is an expression that for the most part is very misunderstood and sometimes taken out of context.

I must say it is sure three words that can fire up people that look for negatives when they get beat. "Deep and Alone". If the other dogs in the cast were better dogs. Maybe the ALONE part would not bother them so much.
Haven't you seen a lot of "Close and Alone" situations also. Coondogs that run only coons or hunt hard and know where to hunt when turned loose tend to be alone when hunted with other dogs that run a lot of other stuff or just hang out.

I want my dog alone because yours can't keep up or is wondering around somewhere else or looking for a coon while running down a road.
Think about our pack hounds of years ago. Say you have one and it is always a low strike dog and a slow tree dog. You would not win many hunts. So now you figure out you have to scold and correct this dog away from the competition to win. Thats true. But remember this. The solid winning coondog is not alone because of its faults. But because of your dogs faults and you trained your dog to be alone and it still can't win.

So why is "Deep and Lonely" a popular saying. It is the most catchy one and in the simplest form. Describes a winner.

I want my dog to be deep and alone for the following reasons:

1. She wont be around yours to cause her to do something she wouldn't normally do and screw up.
2. It takes the pressure off the handler and allows the dogs to do the competing.
3. My dog will take full responsibility for her actions on whatever way she does it.
4. The coons you tree behind me aren't nearly as big of a deal as the coon you tree ahead of me. I expect mine to strike a track and drive it down there and tree it. Not get on an ole feed track and grub it up to a big ole den. So deep and lonely until you find a track you can handle and have those eyes is my preference.
5. There's not a better feeling than leash locking the cast to walk .6 through the section to see your coon to win the hunt... LOL

With my previous post being said you live and die by it. For instance this past weekend at the pup shootout in MS, Icon covered on a coon for 25 way late on the tree time. He did tree 3 to himself as did another dog in the cast. BUT he won by 25+... the dog that covered late won the cast!

Tyler I have seen the situation you described plenty of times. I am sure you have also. I just want mine to tree coons and let the chips fall were they may.

Two months ago here we had the exact same thing happen. Cut three dogs. They all eventually get treed on different trees and all have a coon. One got treed and released early enough to cover another dogs tree and was the winner. You can't ask for more than your dog trying to tree a coon. If the chips fall were they are treed and released in time to get some of the other guys. Well that happens. If all your dog is doing is covering then there is some work to be done. Doing their own thing and covering from time to time. Spells Winner.


I personally don't like a dog being leash locked. I think CHKC as the lead on that rule. Along with their stricter rule on returning to the trees.

I have been lucky enough to see a few of these hounds in my lifetime but the one I've seen lately is one that can run a track like a heat seeking missile and will have a coon 95% of the time is one that's done a lot of winning. And trust me, he's just as described. Takes his tracks as they come short or far. Will be a lone almost always because most can't keep up with him. His name" Wipeout Slim"

If you every see that type of hound. That is what you are looking for. They are out there. They are rare and if you didn't raise it. They are expensive.

I am not saying this type of dog didn't need some minor training but for the most part. Natural and they are rare.

I can see Deep and Alone in thin coons or if the place has been pounded to death the dog should pack it's bags and get going. But in coon county it just wrecks the hunt! jmho

Dogs that will get in there deep and tree a coon are easy to find. Dogs that will put up 1000+ are easy to find. Give me one that can do both. Now they are rare!

To me, it is a much better feeling when my dog trees a coon to win 250 yds in front of the cast and old deep and alone is sitting in there at .6.

Mr. Fielderman I think one of Kevin Cables dog did exactly that this weekend. He had like 1850 points. That dog is also get deep and lonely.

The deep and alone dogs are hard to beat in a one hour cast! My question is without the use of Garmins on a cast would this type of hound be effective?

Please understand I said nothing negative about deep and alone. Understand their value and ability to win. Just said what I really really liked is the dog that takes the track away and trees alone because he got there so much faster. The one issue I have with deep and alone is that it is hard for me to find places to hunt that style of dog. Out side of WMA don't have any place a dog can go 1 1/2 miles and not be where he is not supposed to be. Most places 800-900 yards is as deep as I need one to go. But guys I'm older and really have to hunt a different style dog.

I wish there was hunts that scratched the backer!! I think everyone of them should be scratched for gaining points for something they did not do!! There’s a difference between a fast track dog and one that just picks it’s head up and runs to a dog that’s treed!! A dog man can tell the difference!! I will not pack one to town that backs. I’m not saying it’s wrong or right but I want it ALL weather it’s good or bad. If they all struck and treed for the same amount of points by there self we would see which one is the best!! Scratch the backer!! Gets beat on track, SCRATCH EM, backs way late SCRATCH EM we suppose to be rewarding the dog that TREES THE MOST COONS not the ones that rack up the biggest scores. Take the coon treer out the cast and ole backing Betty will take all night to get a coon treed or stand beside us with her ears perked up. But it ain’t like that so next thing you know those that ain’t got much sense (there’s a bunch of em) are breeding to these big winners and they don’t really have much to offer to the breed!! Jmo

I want a dog that leaves LOOKING for a coon, if they end up deep that's fine as long as there hunting for a coon. Around here this time of year a dog has to get in the country to get after a coon, but I want them hunting not dog racing or sprinting to get away from other dogs. Most leave running and ambush a hot coon deep in the country. A lot of the time they get out of hearing and the only way you know there treed is because the GARMIN tells you they are. I'm not knocking this type of dog we've owned a few and would own another, they tree a lot of coon, and they win a lot, but there not the most enjoyable dogs to pleasure hunt.
