Actually, that isn't completely correct, Dirtdevil. If you know the family history, you can create a genetic analysis pedigree.
Chapter 6 of Control of Canine Genetic Diseases is titled The Interpretation and Use of Pedigrees to Determine the Genetic Status of Given Dogs.
Plants,
I was talking with a guy the other day on the phone, won't mention any names. But he was telling me how he was a plant geneticist for over 30 yrs, our conversation was basically one sided for he was speaking about stuff way over my head...But I listened and tried not to ask him to repeat himself to much, cause I already felt stupid and didn't want to sound stupid on top of it..
But he was a firm believer in line breeding and inbreeding, said he could almost clone certain species of plants and animals by inbreeding and line breeding heavy. Constantly choosing animals with the same traits, looks, behavior, habits, etc...It was a very interesting conversation...
The reason I called this gentleman was he had made a father daughter cross. I was curious about...the sire of the litter would of been the pups Father, Grand father X2, and Great Grand Father ....Thus the conversation...Just thought I would Share this...

That is an example of a LINEbreedimg...not IN breeding. Note the 3x3 ( Molotov is present in 3rd gen of sire and dam). This is one of my pups. The sire although spectacular has been largely a dud at stud. Although most of his breedings have been 3x3x4. Just am example of what a linebreeding looks like on paper. i would say this was not successful. The difference in inbreeding/linebreeding for "type" is that you do get offspring that looks the same type. This works well in the show dog world. However in performance dogs.....whole different ball game!

Another...one of the greatest racing dogs that ever lived. Whole litter was fantastic. Almost total outcross. His sire and his sire's sire were super producers. They actually out produced their opportunities (broods). Usually it is the other way around, the studs under produce to their opportunities ( good broods).

Dirtdevil,
I was only repeating what the top guy on canine genetic diseases in this country was saying.
Of course, it doesn't give a total picture of a dog's genome, but it does offer a picture for any trait you want to look at.
