Forward this info to any hunting friends. It is amazing how much being a squeaky wheel works.
Occupy safe trapping habits.
This is what the opposition is saying;
"I don't think there is appetite at the Legislature to make any changes,'' said Rep. Tony Cornish, R-Good Thunder, a former DNR conservation officer. "We can't solve all the world's problems with over-regulation.''
Meanwhile, Cornish said few dogs are caught in traps. "I think they should just accept it as one of those unfortunate things,'' he said.
Con Christianson, a trapper and legislative liaison for the Minnesota Trappers Association, said requiring the traps to be 5 feet off the ground would make them useless to trappers seeking bobcats and raccoons.
"There would be problems for trappers,'' said Christianson, whose group hasn't taken a formal position on the legislation. "There are a lot of traps out there, and the number of incidents are very, very few, so what would you be fixing?''
Said Cornish: "People should realize a restriction like this basically knocks out trapping raccoons, which is a terrible pest for our waterfowl.''
If this isn't enough to motivate you what is? When you're own dog gets killed?
Very, very, very few incidents.... Compared to what? What houndsmen has never encountered a 220 or doesn't know someone whose dog has been caught?
Pests for our waterfowl? They didn't care about that issue in 2005 when they put the season back on us.
Dog Groups
Has anyone contacted the other hunting groups whose owners have dogs, like pheasants forever, grouse association ect?
they need to be aware of this as well. maybe we can get some help from them.
Ive contacted a couple bird groups.

To my knowledge, no one is doing anything at any organized level.
A bunch of individuals are doing the best they can contacting others to spread the word, and some of them are contacting they're reps. That's all great, but we can do more.
I think there is a misconception with houndsmen in this state that there is some secret invisible army of people fighting for our rights. If you want to know who is doing what, all you need to do is look in the mirror. If you're not doing it, chances are its not getting done.
I am trying to contact John Reynolds to see what angles he has been taking besides dealing with legislators and the media. I agree, getting all sporting dog groups together on this would be a huge step in the right direction. I haven't heard back from him yet.
I'm not very old but I remember a few years back when some individuals with the MN Trailhounds Assoc were working tirelessly on the Bear Bill to allow bear hunting with hounds in MN. I can remember it didn't get much support from my local club and probably no different with several others. I think MN Trailhounds blew they're wad pushing for that and only fell short by a few votes. From what I can tell that organization hasn't been the same since. I was a young kid then, but I'd say we as coonhound clubs and coonhunters made a huge mistake not putting more effort and support into that issue. It possibly could have changed the entire culture of our sport within our state. These types of opportunities don't come around very often.... lets not sit back and hope others are doing something for us.
good deal Jesse. Hopefully something good will come from this. there are alot of members of the state association that do not look at the message boards. How can we get the word out farther?
alot of this would be good to post on facebook,it can reach out a little further.

I wasn't speaking to you directly Josh. I was speaking in general terms. Once again, my comments on-line are misinterpreted! LO
And, I informed you via email the very same time I was informed of this a few weeks back. Remember we traded emails about it. I informed every houndsmen in my email contact list the moment I found out. Any info I've gathered I've cross posted on this thread. Just trying to do what I can to help.
I think you guys are right on the money about what could or should be done.
The state assoc. has to get a letter out to all members of all the clubs to contact their rep. Mike Eaton should get the Secertary to mail out letters to every state member not just to club officiers. Come on everyone the next dog killed in a coniber MAY BE YOURS.

contacts
I will get in touch with some friends for other dog groups.
Everyone pass the word.
Houndsmen, bird dog groups & etc aren't enough to get the attention of legislators.... its going to take an outcry from the general public to get they're attention. Therefore the best thing we can do is continue to spread the word about the issue. Letters to the Editor of newspapers and outdoor publications are a great way to drum up interest.
Also, contact your legislators and urge them to support the bill. Contact them repeatedly if necessary until you get they're attention. Email is good, phone calls are better, letters are best.
Don't sit back and wait. The next 2 months are extremely important.
just cause we are not on here bragging about how much we are doing dosent mean we are not contacting the right people in or area !!

Just got a call back from my Representive. She said most of the calls are running mostly against this bill. Trappers are calling and telling her that the problem is us hunting dog that are not under control. We need more pressure from our side. From what she told me it doesn't look good.

Start getting the word out and make your calls and e-mails.
Houndsmen:
Both of the bills, the senate and the house bills, have been referred to their respective committees with no further action at this time. We need to contact our representatives and senators to get action on these bills. Please take the time to contact your rep and senator, especially if they are on the House Environment, Energy, and Natural Resources Policy and Finance or the Senate Environment and Natural Resources committees.
You can find the information you need on line.
For the House go to www.house.leg.state.mn.us and then find About the Minnesota House of Rep and then click on About the House and then at the bottom of that page you can click on House Member or State Senator. Then you can find the district you live in and the legislators name by clicking on the District Finder at the bottom of the page for the house representative or Find Your Senator at the top for the Senate page.
You can also look at the Committee Members on these pages to see if your representative or senator is on the Natural Resource committees where these bills are now.
For houndsmen in the Northwest; contacts are
Dan Fabian in District 1A rep.dan.fabian@house.mn[/email] 651-296-9635
Debra Kiel in District 1B rep.deb.kiel@house.mn 651-296-5091

Below and attached is the language presented for conibear restrictions.
[97B.929] BODY-GRIPPING TRAPS.
A person may not set a body-gripping, conibear-type trap, unless the trap is:
(1) at least five feet above the ground;
(2) placed in a manner that the trap will protect domestic dogs from inadvertent
taking, as provided in rules of the commissioner; or
(3) a water-set trap that is completely submerged in public waters, streams, or
wetlands.
Please note that this restriction includes all size conibear traps.
Also note the DNR's ability to decide through the rule making process a body gripping trap method to prevent inadvertent trapping of domestic dogs (2). Likely recessed boxes.
