-- Garmin Question??????????? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=324344)

Maybe we need to install electrodes on the dog's brain

Then maybe we could actually read their mind as to what they are doing. lo This is ridiculous.

The dogs are treed towards the middle of the section. I CAN HEAR THEM. With my garmin, I can tell how far they are. I can also measure how far they are from the next section road and from the cross roads. I can also measure how far they are from the old farm road that cuts through the section.

You can walk. I'm driving to the closest spot.

With the time saved--I can make another drop.

5 miles by truck is way different than 5 miles by the way the crow flies.

There is absolutely positively no bounceback. It is a different system all together. The radio waves only sends data to the handheld, the handheld does NOT use those waves for positioning, only data so as long as it can pick that data up it will be accurate no matter which direction it comes from. The data is the exact coordinates of the dog by GPS measurements.

As for range, normally it's 800-1000 yards before needing the roof mount. Roof mount goes 1-2 miles depending.

Now if you get on top of a ridge then you can pick them up for a mile or two on the handheld and 4 or 5 on the roof mount. It's no different than the other trackers in that regard, while it only sends data that data is sent by radio waves which is determined by line of sight. The less things between you and the dog the farther it will reach.

Even if it loses signal, unlike the old beep beeps where the dog is just gone till you can pick the signal back up, the Garmin shows you exactly where they were last picked up at. You can use the map to go there (say they went in a sink hole, with the beep beeps they are just gone unless you can get close enough to get some type of signal). With the Garmin you can just walk right to the mouth of the sinkhole cause it will show you on the map exactly where they were when you lost signal.

They are a great tool. I sold my beep beep within 2 weeks of getting the Garmin.

Thanks Rip.... good information. I understand straight line distance versus terrain distance which is a big factor in some places around here. A guy pm'd me a link to buy one with 2 collars for $627.00 includes shipping. A local guy sells them for $525.00 with one collar. The $627.00 one doesn't have the card don't know about the $525.00 dollar one though. Thanks again.
Jeff

If they are in a section ... I can beat you to the tree before you can drive closer.

When a guy runs to the dogs to get their quicker ... folks say you're afraid they won't stay treed.

If guys drive closer to get their quicker ... there are enough heavies and lazies in coonhunting .. that we say they are just trying to make another drop .

Jeff, call Fox Hollow Supply in Glascow, KY he has the best prices around and will ship to you.

Rip you can lead a mule to the water but you cant make him drink. Who cares whether Justin wants a Garmin or not, let him hunt the old fashioned way.

Lee , that's what'd I think too ... but you'd be amazed at how many caring pm's I get and how much folks will keep arguing with me ..

when I get old and can't get around or hear ... or if i get fat .. I'm gonna get me a Garmin .

My only comment is,
A garmin is a fine tool, it doesn't only tell where your dog is, but it tells on him to. This really helps out on young dogs. You will know if he's working, being lazy, or a me to dog.
It will help you decide which dogs will make the cut and quick, its like having a video camera strapped to his butt.
The next best thing is knowing where your dog is, close or getting in a road, and will tell you how to head him off.

Just my 2cent

Just take the young dog hunting and you can find out all that for free ...

If you're gonna drive to them and cut them off at a road because the Garmin says so ... why not just drive along beside them as they trail anyway ?

What does a Garmin do that you cant do without it ... that's the first and most important question you will have to answer if you take a product to someone to market it or replace an older version ...

... the coonhunting world doesn't follow logical patterns like that .. so we just make stuff up to justify having what he cool kids have , lol.

Something else that's kinda funny ... folks keep saying how dangerous roads are ... but ... we go hunting and cast from a road , stand in the road and load the dogs up in the road ... but , we get worried about the dogs being near roads ????

If you want your dog to have some life insurance against cars ... be consistant in showing them the road is bad , get your butt out of the road when you cast and don't call them to a road to find you ... duhh ,

Do some homework ... tie our dog up by the road and shock them when cars go by ... have someone drive up on them and scare them with a car ..

Do your part to send the right message and help train your dog that cars and roads are bad ... the Garmin can't do none of that for you ...

A lot of us don't want to wast a week or two on a dog that isn't going to work out. If your point is a wast of money because other tracking systems are cheaper, then I will agree with that to a extent, but they are several others that will cost you a lot more Then $599.99. Go price a Magnum or a Marshall and you will see what I mean. Or go buy a Wildlife and a hand held GPS, same money.Just think what would happen if every cast had a non-hunting judge and he outfitted your dog with a DC30, He wouldn't catch your dog off the tree would he and you draw a minus? A garmin tells you everything you need to know.

NAME THAT DOG........

THANKS GUYS !!!!! Next time I get a dog that wont listen, refuses to learn, hardheaded, does what ever it wants whenever it wants, does not pay attention. A hound that no other hounds will honor because its always wrong THEN I wont put a Garmin collar on him and name him JUSTIN.

Reality is that they are a nice tool for hunters who care for their hounds, that want to be able to head them off or get to them quicker in any situation. That just plainly want to know at any givein time where their hounds are. It answers questions like did the pup hunt out this woods with the old dog or did he just go in there and stand around. And on a windy night they are worth their weight in gold.

Yes I own one.... never owned a beep beep..... hunted for over a quarter of a century. The Garmin doesnt make me older and lazy, it shows I'm older and smarter !! Best Tracking Device on the market to date !!!!!

LOL! I love listening to Justin get people fired up. He!! he fires me up sometimes but everybody has a opinion. Mine is it is the best money I have ever spent on a pc of hunting equipment bar none!! It will save you time more times than not.

You can buy a system many places for a few dollars less than others. You have to comsider what you get when you buy it.
Can the person that you buy it from tell you how to operate it? Can you call them at 10pm when you can't figure out what is going on and get help? I know a place that gives all of this and much more because they not only sell them they USE them night in and night out.
The cheapest is not always the best deal on a lot of things.

I would call Bruce Conkey at 386-972-4937. He sells them at a fair price and can help you get the most out of the system!

MY OPINION

most of the errors people are having with their garmins are because of the operator...
the only time i loose signal is when they get into something such as holes, caves and buildings.. ive kept signal at half a mile in rolling hills...
be sure to calibrate compass often...update your garmin and keep the garmin collar id number low.

yea there was something wrong, it would never connect up again. it was only a week or so from being new. i sent it back and they sent me another new one. this new one works fine AND JUST LIKE IT IS SUPPOSE TO.

so if one can just stop working like the first one, why would i think another one cant too .

i use the garmin every time i go,but i also have the old job on it too.
i had one garmin that was junk first. so i do not trust them to be the only device to help me find a dog if i need it..

but thats just me, i carry a lighter ,but i still got a pack of matches in the truck.
