Garmin Question???????????

What's the range on the Garmins? Mileage wise? I've heard the greatest distance they'll track is 2 miles is this so? Does anyone experience bounce or false location readings? Or are they dead on accurate? Thanks.
Jeff

I"ve seen them reach 1/2 mile to 7 miles, just depended what frequency it was set on. They made some changes and the new ones should work a lot better

Depends on the terrain. With the truck antenna I have got as far as 5.5 miles. 2 miles in the flat lands of Indiana is probably the norm with the hand held. Worth every penny in my book ! If a dog gets over a mile in most places where I live he is about or has crossed a road so at least you might be able to head him off or be there when he/she crosses. I love mine !!

I don't know where New London is but I guess it's like where I live mountains and ridges. Do they recommend one frequency for flat landers and another for hilly country? Or do you know by trial and error what or what not to use? Thanks for your input.

Jonah..... I'm reluctant in buying one for around here I hunt a lot of rough places and was curious if they'd work in all terrain. Travel some pretty good distances to get to the dogs sometimes. Thank you.

JEFF, THERE ARE GUYS ON HERE THAT LIVES IN MOUNTAINOUS AREAS THAT SAY THEY GET REAL GOOD RECEPTION. I KNOW THEY DONT PICK UP IF A DOG IS IN A TILE OR IN A CAVE. BUT FOR THE MOST PART NORMALLY IF THEY LOSE SIGNAL THE DOG WILL MOVE OR WE WILL AND IT COMES RIGHT BACK. NEVER HAVE LOST SIGNAL FOR VERY LONG.

ARENT THEIR GUYS IN YOUR AREA THAT HAS ONE YOU COULD TALK TOO?

Jeff - If your dogs get deep fairly steady you need to get the hand held antenae or the truck mount. In my area here in Pa we have hilly terrain not mountains. I lose signal in the 800+ yd range. We can generally drive to the other side and it picks them back up. I have only had to use the handheld antenae one time and they were treed 1.4 miles. If the collar is off any it's not enough to make a diifference. As you walk in on the dogs you'll watch the distance between you and dog dropping until you are basically on top of them. I left my Garmin at home one time and had to use my Maxima. I was in half a panic most of the night because the only thing I basically knew was...."they're over that way...I think...."

We have a little of both terrains. On the older units you could go in and change the frequency but evidently that have made it were you can't do that anymore. When you could change it you wanted to start with the lowest frequency and go up till you found its sweet spot. Their is a recent thread on here about mileage gain with the rubber antenna and that should do the trick. It has good directions on how to do it and said it would take about 45 min. All the new Garmins made after October should have the new upgrade already, so if your going to buy one it should be fine. If you have a old one and can't get the range you should, try sending it back, I heard they will send you a new one.

I know several people that have them but I'm trying to get the input of someone that has coon dogs. Most of the guys around here can keep up with their dogs with a 50 ft. rope. That's my main concern loosing the signal. Thanks.

SOmeone please sell me one of there 2-7 miles tracking garmins. I have yet to see ANYONES do it. Fartheset out of mine, with a long range antenna was 1.89 miles. I've hunted with dozens of guys from northern ohio- mid michigan that were using garmins and cutting out at 800 yards - 1 mile. IN FLAT CORN FIELDS.

There must be less radio waves or something down south, where everyone is claiming they get 2 miles+

Topo cards are a necessity. Elevation-what side of the mountain are they on....water-what side of the water are they on....roads - are they getting close to one or on the other side where you can drive to them. Shows utility- power lines, gas lines....I think you're getting the idea. As far as best deals....couldn't tell ya. Bought mine a year ago...used.

I hear both good and bad about the Garmins. If they can't track 2 miles around here you're wasting your money. I thank you for your input. What confuses me is.... is everyone using the same type system? I would hope a man could hear his dog 800 yards away in a flat cornfield. LOL!

Thanks for all the information. I want to buy one but I also want to make sure I don't permanently lose my dog in the process. I like your latin signature. Are you Roman? Latin is a dead language it's as dead as it can be it killed all the Romans and now it's killing me! LOL!!!

You will NOT regret buying it. All the units are the same. When my garmin hits 800 yards I'm usually getting in the truck to drive around.

No roman here. W.A.S.P. all the way. I had to purchase nite vision and thermal imaging for the small military unit I ran. The one company we dealt with used that saying as their little promotional gig. When it comes to coon hunting....Carpe Nocturnum, seize the night!!

Jeff I hunt in alot of the mountains here in Va. I get the same distance as most say on here. 800-1000yds and it's hit and miss after that distance. But the unit gives you so much information that, up to this point, it has been very easy to drive or walk closer and you will pick them up again. But before you cut your hound loose make absolute sure the system is reading that hounds collar. I hear alot of folk bash them and maybe that is a legitimate argument in their case. But as far as me and my hounds go I would not use anything else at this point. They make hunting so much safer for your hound and saves alot of time guessing. I hunt deep hunting hounds and they push it to the limit half the time but with logic and common sense it is the best all around money I ever spent as far as coon hunting goes. JMO and personal experiance. There has been plenty of nights that unit has saved me a bunch of walking. Bruce Conkley is one of many who can give you a good deal on one. Personally I like Conkleys customer service. He was patient with me when I was getting mine because like you I was very concerned and skeptical at first.................until I got one!!

We had the PVS-7D's. "Bout the only time I really liked them was when you hit the toggle on the LAD. Infrared beam kinda made it like shooting chickens in a fenced in pen. I don't even remember what the TI was I ordered. Neat little handheld about the size of a small camcorder.....you could see 'em in the weeds.... I believe Night Vision was the name of the company.

Jeff you are not going to find any places rougher than where I hunt and I love my Garmin. Like everyone is saying about 1000 yards with just the garmin and 5 or more miles with the truck mount or long range hand held antenna. As far as the map goes there is no signal bounce or anything, where it says your dog is at is where its at. After hunting with my Garmin I could not hunt without it.

Jeff

Ive hunted all around your neck of the woods with the garmin. I assure you they will work "if" you learn how to use it. I hunt off mules with mine, never a problem. Just about everyone I have hunted with close to your area has success using theirs.
My hounds are ussually within a mile of straight line from me. I have seen one go 13 miles when he was chasing "I dont know what" and still stayed within a mile by way crow flys.
I have tracked up to 5 miles with the handheld antenna both in flat country and here at the house(picking up another buddies dog).
The norm is tracking with in one mile. Of course if your standing at the bottom of a mt your not going to reach the other side very well. You can do it with the extended ant just not as affefective but when your on top you can reach out and touch them. No different than the old style trackers, just accurate as hell.
Go get you one, those good Albert dogs wont out hunt the Garmin as long as you know how to use it correctly. Its only money.....They will save you "several" walking miles and make your world so much easier.

i still use both collars on my dogs.a garmin and wildlife tx 1000
for an all out lost dog i want the range of the wildlife.

the garmins are nice, but the collars are junk nylon.cut mine off and rivited dayglo for the buckle side. the charging port is in a bad place and prone to dirt and everything else in it. the handheld antennas are junk and dont hold up to what my stuff endures coonhunting.got more range 2 miles from 1 mile with the fold up antenna and i like it best.

my garmin lost signal and the dog was less then 4oo yards from me.never did hook up again. i was a nervous wreck till it struck in and got treed. i aint not had some kind of tracker on my hounds for years. i now put the garmin collar on and then strap the wildlife collar on it.

i like knowing where the dog is as far as roads and which side of the river.but i know if the garmin fails ,the old beep beep will still be there.
they will have to improve a whole lot to be the only collar i put on a dog.the garmin collar comunicates to the hand held with a radio signal.they need to improve the range. give a dependable garmin with the range of the wildlife and i will say they are better.untill then, i will use a backup old style tracker for distance..

Must be something wrong with it! No reason for it to lose signal @ 400 yards unless it was in a hole or cave or in a building. So maybe if it was working right you wouldnt need or want another collar on the dog. I'd say something must be wrong with it. JMO
But I do agree that they have a few bugs they need to iron out. but I couldnt turn my dogs loose without one on.
