Larry,

Took me a little bit to figure out that you have to zoom in to see all the details like creeks, lakes and FM roads.

Last night I had an emeregncy, had to go home and leave my dog. When I went back today to find my dog she was 3 miles off my lease. I used the map pointer to measure her from a main road and drove around and found her laying on someones steps....lol

Would have never known (exactly)by regular tracking systems without walking or driving around a lot....This system works great!

I need to talk with you about some other stuff so I'll be calling you later this week.

Thanks,

KG

Thanks for the tip. I went to the site this morning and placed my order. It has to be a screwup on their part as the transmitter alone is more expensive on their site.

I also ordered mine this morning! Got the Topo 2008 last night on Amazon for $39.95 NEW, and Purchased my 2 GB Micro SD Card on Ebay, less than $18.

Now I gotta get that stubby collar....

I ordered mine last night from buydig.com too. Just couldn't pass that price up. I run my dogs near the Manitoba border and need something that tells me when they are getting close to the border. Last year had a dog run deep and tree about 600 feet on my side of the international border. Great place to hunt and I haven't gone back for fear of getting thrown in the slammer if I have to cross to retrieve a dog. This device should help me hunt in the vicinity of the border. Happy hunting!

Just had to have one...

Ordered mine today... For you experts with the unit can you tell me what the must have accessories are and where you've found to be the best place to get them?

TOPO Map, Micro SD Card and the external truck mount antenna for longer range. If you want to over lay the tracks on your computer then google earth is nice too.

Don't buy the low profile antenna for DC 20 because it doesn't pick up nearly as far as the regular antenna in thick cover or deep gullies.

I've only had mine around two weeks but have learned to use it very well, it has already saved me some steps and taught me a lot about my hounds......you'll see what I mean when you get yours!

You might want to talk to booboo and get you a card like I did. Other than that I dont know crap about em either!! I did look at the truck ant and the truck charger. Might have to get both of those. I think?? I'll know more by next week. Mines supposed to be here by saturday.I hope.

Posted by Kenny Gates on 12-27-2007 08:24 PM:

Truck 12V DC CHARGER COMES WITH IT OR AT LEAST MINE DID.

There is a lot this unit can do so just take your time and learn one thing at a time. Most important thing is to calibrate the unit as soon as you get it and every time you replace the batteries!

BOOBOOBRADY can get you the card and put all the maps on it and all you have to do is install it under the batteries and select the "show all" mode....it's easy

Forgot, The rubber over the antenna comes off in thick cover. I used a zip tie at the base of antenna to keep it on and I also recommend that you buy some replacement antennas.

Also if you use the DC 20 on a collar (don’t trust vest) you will need to add weight to keep it up on the dogs neck. I use an e-collar as a counter balance. Lion Country has a count “R” balance collar but I don’t know if it works. Go here to see: http://www.lcsupply.com/index.php?p...5Bname%5D=astro

Larry,

Sorry for using your post as an information center

Have they sold out? Went to get one @ buydig and the page for the astro seemed to have been moved??? Any ideas?

Posted by Coondawg on 12-27-2007 11:22 PM:

...

They must be out Cory...I ordered mine at 2:00 and have already gotten shipping notification.

Thanks for the additional info Kenny. Is direct from Garmin the only/cheapest place to get antenna? For now I plan to run it on a traditional tracking collar using it as a backup or on a dummy e-collar .

BOOBOOBRADY, can you PM or email (rpayne@horizonsoftware.com) with details on getting the map card?

Thanks again.

How do they work in the thick forest? I have trouble with my GPS in thick timber and didn't know how this would work any better?

I was hunting in The Sam Houston National Forest tonight and my TOPO map didn't show FM 945, FM 2025 or FM 2666. These are heavily used roads that show up on every map except the TOPO. San Jacinto River is one of the oldest rivers in Texas and it doesn’t show up on the TOPO map either.

I bought the maps so I would know when my dog got to close to a road or a river and didn’t expect it to show small dirt roads or small creeks, but I thought it would at least show paved roads or large rivers.

Any ideas or any one else having this problem?

Are all TOPO maps created equal ?

Kenny i don't know why they are not picking up. If it is a marked location it should pick it. This is the first problem i have seen with it. give me a call and i will see if i can get it fixed
