For some people's information Phil Newland has numerous wins with his beagle dogs, Fire River Lacy, dual champion, was inducted into the hall of fame and was ownded by Phil Newland, he has raised a whole litter of dual champion beagles with Hal Davis, he also owned dual champion Fire River Bridget. He also owned Nt.Ch. Tree Hammering Rocky, out of Miller's Little Joker. Phil has hunted with Allen Snedegar, Rick Emerson, Elwood Simmons, Terry Daniels and Alan Kalal along with others. I also know for a fact that Phil hunts he comes all the way to Iowa to pheasant hunt, and you know you love to hunt when you come all the way to Iowa...LOL...Phil wanted you all to know that he is a hunter, with coonhounds, beagles and bird dogs, and if you would like to visit with him just call him he'll visit with you about it!

To clarify, my reference to making changes was in regards to changing wording to agree with how the association may want to state something. My way of thinking is that we can sometimes use more descriptive language to better explain what we mean in such a way that the ORIGINAL BREED STANDARD IS better understood. I was in not suggesting we change the standard of what we want our hounds to be. I actually do think the flexibility and variety within the breeds is a good thing.

This was never about his abiltity

to hunt-or-show! It has never been a decision of pleasure, competitive or show! I hope a voice from all venues will be present. Have we forgotten.... bear hunters, lion hunters, deer hunters.... We have a strong representation within these sports with UKC registered Treeing Walkers.

This was about the fact that a standard is "rumored" of being changed and at this time the TWBFA hasn't announced to the membership it's intention. It's about the fact that the historical decisions in that association were made by committees. So where is the committee on this?

If it is that Phil has been asked to make the final say in this matter, then we as the membership - PAID membership - would hope that the board would publish such happenings, not to mention both Phil and the BOD be prepared to answer all and any questions/concerns which the membership has!

I have personally been advised from an attending member that the B&T membership group was presented with "changes". In knowing this I believe a big "stink" is out there. From my understanding UKC would like to see that all breed standards be more uniform. But isn't each breed individualized? What happened to simple formatting?

The issues about competitive hunters vs pleasure hunters; show dogs vs hunted dogs. All of us have our own opinions of what we do with our dogs. I don't ask you to feed my dogs, therefore I don't ask you to accept the type of dog I like or what I do with my dogs. We all have an opinion on what or how we participate in this sport. The matter of breeders producing dogs that may or may not hunt isn't an issue at hand. We always have and always will have Just "hunters" and just "show" TW. It's been like this since the late 70's. Research your TW handbooks and you'll see all the dual titles of world winners or sectional winners -vs- now. We can't point the finger at one person. We are all quilty of this! We breed for what we want! We'll never change! It's the society we are in.

Get back to this issue at hand!!!

To the TWBFA BOD..... have "format" recommendations been made to the association about the breed standard? If so how will this matter be handled, processed, and made public to the membership. Do we have a chance to voice our opinions for the formatting? When will this "formatting" become print? If we have concerns about this current standard who do we direct our concerns to/with.

That's all I want to know!

Posted by StackemUp on 05-11-2006 09:19 PM:

that's the concern

Kathy's article "to me" was that they were formatting. Formatting to me means getting all points of interest in the same order, being consistent with veribage, using the same source of words.... formatting.

But to what I understand the "formatted" version presented to the B&T members changes the length of the ear from "reaching the end .... to long". So that's a little bit of a change.... IN MY OPINION. But some can see that as long as it reaches "the end" it can be longer.... so I don't know what's going on.

So the entire questions is ...... has UKC asked for formatting or have they made changes?

Can't answer what is going on with the TW standard, because I'm not sure what was presented to the board. If they have been given a "formatted" suggestion no one is noting the status or the clubs intentions!

Tricia and who ever else

this may concern...........I can not belive you people will start a post like this on a Rumor !! All that U.K.C. has asked was to look at making the six breed standard more defined for the people and for the judges, that is all that I understood that they wanted. I will tell you one thing for sure and I have nothing against anyone on here voicing their opinion, but I can assure you that Phil Newland will not be making any changes PERIOD. This topic will be discussed by the T.W.B.F.A Board of Directors and Officers and we will contact U.K.C. with the results. Thank you, Alan Kalal

Thank you Alan

That what we as the membership needed for assurance.

Posted by Todd K / UKC on 05-12-2006 04:31 PM:

Let me put this one to rest before I leave for the weekend.

UKC is recommending to each association that they form a committee of their own choosing to review the proposed standard. Yes, the revision is primarily one of re-organization. But as I said above, there were also some clarification issues that we would like to address to make the standards more descriptive. We are not trying to get any of the associations to try to change the dog's type. That's why we are asking for association input. As guardians of the breed, they are the experts on their particular breed. Any and all concerns of the associations will be addressed and the standard written to their satisfaction.

I'm going to suggest that each association for a committee to examine the proposals. That committee may take the proposal to the membership for comment. The committee should then filter those comments and create an official response on behalf of the association. Those responses can be officially presented to UKC at Autumn Oaks. Kathy will appreciate meeting with each association at Autumn Oaks face to face to make sure the standard is to their liking. This will in fact be the most efficient process to work through this project.

We are suggesting a completion by Autumn Oaks to give the Assn's time to work on their end and also to allow us enough time to make revisions for the new rulebook. I would suggest that anyone that is interested in this process contact their breed association to make their concerns known. The proposals will not be collectively posted on the website. They are being presented to Association officers so that they may handle it as best seen fit.
