I never judge a book by its cover. this year I have been training one for a buddy in new York . he will be a year old in may. this pup was treeing his own squrr well at 7 months of age. then I hurt my back bad so him and I wont get out till spring again.hes smart as a wip. hes awesome in the kennel. if he barks and I say stop he listens well. he hunts most times on a dead run alone.he has charm to boot. hes just awesome and gentle with my four granddaughters. I really cant find a bad fault with this pup. other than when I first got him it looked like I had a rabbit in the kennel with his straight up ears. if my back improves theres no question I would buy a pup for ME

It makes no sense but I want a dog that looks like a traditional American hunting dog. But for a combination dog you can also consider a stevens stock cur, commonly called a stevens cur. Some of them even open on track. I like them and the busher stock too.

Thanks bud you hunt the Stevens curs are they bigger than the mnt curs or smaller

Posted by croatankid on 02-11-2016 05:04 PM:

The stevens curs are typically smaller than the busher dogs. Some lines of stevens curs are larger than others but I can tell you which ones are larger. The busher dogs are greater in number than the stevens so you are more likely to find a busher.

The heavy JR line or what is left of it will be the smaller Stephens.

the Stephen stock mtn curs have a very good nose on them, better than a lot of curs & some are as good as hounds.they were bred to be an open trailing cold nose coon dog.moreso for coon than sq. but do good on both.the ones I hunted opened on sq. & coon both & were hard tree dogs

for the less intelligent of us, does any one have a picture of busher and stephens curs together to get a feel for what size difference could be.

There was one on the second page of the classifieds located in Ky.You might check and see if it's still on there.

try calling chad hatfield at 270 286 0076 or 270 246 1810. i'm getting the numbers from an older yearbook.
I would say that both have hugh motors. the busher are bigger and blocky and have cropped tails. the stephens have tails, smaller, and their head is a little longer

I don't have any Stephens but I have plenty of Busher pics. They are usually around 50-60# [/[URL=http://s31.photobucket.com/user/nccatfisher/media/Batman/DSCF0346_zpsjyelnu3o.jpg.html]

If you don't mind a little hard headed (at times), a little possessive, hard to breed (at times) and the looks....depending on how much is in there...ei 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, etc you cannot hardly beat putting finnish spitz in your dogs. Above are a few negatives, the positives are......

Gamey, start early, natural tree dogs, crack that mouth, good tree dogs, accurate, pressure tree dogs, endurance/stamina and grit! My buddy has had a 1/2 spitz and 1/2 feist for years and turned me on to mixing some for fun.

Here's a video of 1/4 spitz, 3/4 feist at 10 weeks old on her first squirrel hide ever seen.

I'll have to go back and find some old pics. I have some of them with hounds I can scan.

I hunted equally for years. I have one here that is a SpGrSqCh. Over the years I have evolved to where I primarily coon hunt simply because in NC it is almost impossible to get in the woods during the daylight to Jan. due to deer hunters.

I still squirrel hunt some but my main love is coon hunting.
