back in then eighty's, early ninety's, I used to climb a lot of trees, I was younger dumber and skinnier, but I have poked more coons out on hounds than I can count , some all I had to do was get close and yell and some I had to slappum with a limb , but I promise they all had to leave the tree in some fashion

I must say that I generally hunt four dogs at a time so the additional dog power plays a big part in keeping them up. As far as lions bailing, I have a stomach full of that and got another dose last Monday morning. Big tom got in some big rocks and simply would not tree in the 100 ft. tall Ponderosa Pines. Dogs had him bayed on various rocks 5 or 6 times and he finally made it over the hog back mountain where he went off a 300-400 ft rock face that was extremely steep. Most all the dogs went around it.
Last winter a buddy of mine treed a female lion that was really bad about jumping but she jumped when they had 15 dogs on the ground and the dogs almost had her stretched out. When she finally shook loose, squirted up in a little pine and would not come out even when one of the young hunters climbed up the tree and attempted to push her out.
By the way, we had 18 dogs on the lion last Monday morning and messed with him for over 5 hours.

I've seen several coons walk down the tree to where they were just above the dogs but I can only remember seeing one jump. That was a couple years ago and we treed two up the same tree. Shot one down and were handling the dogs and getting ready to walk away and the other one jumped from about 30 foot up. We stopped and shined the tree again just to be sure we weren't imagining things.

I actually quit making coons jump to my dog because when I started squalling Duds would get loose on the tree looking for a track out.

I do squall coons down to send pups on though on occasion.

I've never squalled a coon, never owned a squaller, but as mnb&t mentioned, dogs that climb can make coons jump.
Most of our coons here don't bed/den in trees so a dog that climbs like a cat and a tree that can be climbed don't leave many options for a smart coon.

We got treed in a plum thicket a few years ago, coons eyes were everywhere so after we handled dogs, I got back and started sqaulling and those coon sounded like apples hitting the ground.

Last fall had one treed and not long after i got there the coon started climbing down and it finally jumped when it was 8 feet off the ground. I was hunting around some holding ponds and there was a chain link fence around the ponds. The coon bailed and headed right for the fence.

My one female pulls coons from trees if they can't get high enough like in briar bushes. But this one just didn't climb low enough lol
