jumpers

We had one bail out about a week ago. They seem to be extra nervous this time of year. I wonder if something is praying on the youngsters.

Hunting in central KY Friday night and treed two separate coons and they both jumped out while I was trying to leash my female to the tree. Then I cut her loose and both got to a hole. I thought that was weird myself. Wonder if this lunar moon thing happening tonight has anything to do with it?

I've been hunting young dogs this month (one at a time), putting them along cornfields for hot tracks, and just sitting and listening to them work. Fri nite I was sitting 10 yrds inside the woods while the dog was smoking a track. I watched the coon run out of the corn come in the woods 20 yrds then turn and run along side the cornfield. Crawl up a large tree about 15 feet. Cross over to a small tree and bail back out from 10 foot up into the cornfield. The dog was about 100 yrds behind the coon. Talk about not playing fair. I was however impressed with the yearling dog because it was not fooled and went right to were the coon bailed out and continued to work the track. A few weeks ago I was squalling at 2 coon in a tree to get a friends young dog fired up and both coon jumped out of the tree in less than a minute. There was no running around in the tree, they just ran right down and bailed out from about 8 feet up right over my buddys head.

We had one jump out of an oak last year from about 40 ft. It had all four legs straight out like a flying squirrel. Lol. It was one of the funniest things I've ever seen coon hunting.

Coon jumping out of trees is a regular occurrence here in NorCal where we've hunted for the past 15+ years. Makes it really frustrating in a Nite Hunt. Thin coon that have been dogged too much maybe??

But Tiny was on a Nite Hunt in Iowa and winning the cast I think when the same coon treed and bailed twice. So much for winning that night!

Have that happen a few times on a hunt and you get really gunshy about treeing your dog.

LOL!

I like this post

I heard more than once over the years, that they usually only see that hunting a round where I live.

Now I know that's a false statement

It's been a while since I had a good jumper around here.

Most of the time If it bales before you get there It's a Bobcat around here that is

A Coon Bales when you get there or just after you get there

Fisher Cats will usually always cross trees before you get there but not always

we have few coons and all the off game you'll ever want right here LOL
hopefully you have all Dogs handled in time or it get interesting to say the least,,,LOL

Jumping coons are fun

If it's really a coon you'll see it and get to score it more than ounce in a Hunt

Some food for thought

What a lifetime of hunting bail-out coons has done for my old dog is to teach her to swing waaaay out and check hard before committing to a tree. She's an excellent track dog, but takes forever to settle on a tree. That absolutely killed her in the Nite Hunts in Iowa where 99.9% of the time a coon in a tree is a treed coon.
Luckily, we have very few den trees here in CA!

Most of our coons that jump, you'll see it. There's no doubt what just happened. Had a dog that climbed like a cat and would go up 50+ feet to try to grab the coon. One night a coon bailed and he jumped out of the tree right behind it, trying to grab it on the way down. Another night he came out on top of a friend who was a tiny little thing. He was about 90 lbs and just about knocked her unconscious.

Had two dogs climbing trees last night but luckily the coons stayed put. They haven't been hunted much for 5 yrs now, so this bunch doesn't know about hounds yet.

Dogs took a coon about two miles this morning and showed treed. By the time I got to them, they were fighting it on the ground. I don't know if my Jill who climbs like a squirrel climbed up and forced him out or they just caught him on the ground. I know one thing, I thought he was going to whip my dogs before they got him killed.
Rarely do I have a coon jump out on my dogs. And rarely do I have a bobcat jump out of a tree on my dogs. If your dogs really blow the air out of a coon or a cat, he doesn't want back on the ground. The only time I see coons or cats jump on my dogs is one that they "squirrel treed" with no race.
Adios,
Gary

The one that they ran he was about to jump again when I got to tree. They ran him hard all together about 2 miles. Treed him 3 times after the treed about 10 to 15 min he would bale out again. An they would live out like they was looking at it.

jumping coon

I have only SEEN one coon jump. Dogs were treed for 20 minutes probably by the time I got there. I was 2
40 yards from the tree that was halfway up a bluff. I put my light up the tree to see if I could find the coon, and as soon as I did, the coon jump... BAD MOVE MR. COON!! The best hound/ kill dog I have ever seen was under the tree... Ole Babe had that poor joker killed about 3 seconds after it hit the ground!

Since he jumped from the light, I wondered if he had been treed before and maybe shot before?? I have had a couple that I shot and they went into dens.... maybe I need more practice

I have personally experienced three coons jump out of the tree the past month. One, the dogs had treed and it jumped, the second and third happened when I was filling up coon feeders. Very bizarre!

I've seen over 100 coons bail in the last three years.

One without touching a squaller
