-- Turn Outs At Major Hunts, (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928343146)

No doubt bigger numbers at one event means a bigger win for the winners...That's a no brainer.

From the hits on the poll and things repeatedly brought up, I would think that they all play hand in hand...

1.... Too many major hunts

2.... Numbers are down

3.... Location

4.... Economy

Pretty much everyone agrees that there are more major hunts, so the individual hunt numbers are down...

Due to economy folks, like us, are having to look at location..The time it takes to drive to some events are another day off work and expense for an event. We personally have to pick and choose the closer ones due to not being able to take a 1/2 week off for the further away ones.

Just wondering IF anyone has ever really put a pencil down to it IF the numbers are really lower, as to over-all entry numbers for all events on any given weekend. (maybe someone from UKC can answer)..Maybe the same or close to are really out there attending, just having to make choices to travel closer to home.

I guess what I am trying to get at is...If the events were limited, wouldn't the numbers being down, still be an issue due to the economy on cost of travel and time off work? (for the ones further away from said events)

Times are truly different...Cost of living has double, wages at little to no increase to keep up, lack of jobs...I know there are a lot of folks that these issues do not touch them, but many of us it does..Going to the closer events allows us to be on the go at least a couple weekends a month...We used to take off work on Wednesday for drive time to make a Thursday - Saturday major event(drive home on Sunday)...But we just can't anymore..Now days, the events that get our money are 6 hours and under, with consideration to 8 hours...Anything over 8 just isn't possible right now.

OK, I am done...Just my thoughts and how we personally have to choose events today

I can remember when the local hunts would draw 40 or 50 dogs and there were just as many clubs in my area as there are now,and just as many hunts.
All the choices in the poll are factors that have shrunk the hunt numbers but in my area the turnout numbers are small because the number of hunters has shrunk and the ones that are left are getting old.
The popularity that comes along with running hounds rates right up there with undertaker or IRS. agent. Its just the times we live in.

People want to do something most weekends.

That is why in our area there are several HTX, Nite Hunts and now swims. You can follow a circuit on swims now and field-trails in summer when not many hunts. I like HTX's when trees are bare to see coon. Night Hunts in our area there is about 1 every weekend through the winter. Money is just so tight our numbers last year were down.

Seeing more kids coming though and that is the future, we give a ribbon to every child up to 17 for just coming. Cost is minimal. I still have ribbons when I was a kid and now I am almost 50.

24 entries at the ACHA world hunt ,man that is sad . Well I guess the days of the 200 or 350 dog hunts are over ,but I darn sure hope not .

ACHA Little World Hunt

I hunted in the Little World Hunt this year and the turn out wasn't much better than a average night hunt. I think the main reason was because of a snow storm that hit us that weekend. Still had a great time, it was in my back yard, ran smooth and drew some out of state dogs. Ole boy from Tenn won it.

If I figure out how to get participation up among all hunts no matter what KC, I'll spread the word. Think most of it is going to come down to youth getting involved (12-20 yo). It's easy to say you will show up and help at the club, or take that neighbors kid, donate money or time, but getting a coon hunter to do it is one of our worst short falls. Seen it more than once, 10 volunteers at the club meeting for something, 1-2 the night it happends. We have to turn this around some how, mainly by keeping our word, not talking behind each others backs, setting a good example, you know the things our parents taught us as children.

I don't know about in other places, but here in the South, If the hunt is not licensed UKC, you can expect at least a 50% decline in draw, and in most cases 75-80%. Numbers game is affected by a lot of things, gas prices, economy, and just dog power, or as in my case right now, lack there of. From the overall view, if you want numbers, you have to use UKC as your drawing card. Now that comment is going to get me eat up, but the truth is the truth, and as they say, the numbers do not lie.

These KC's are businessess that are in competition with each other. It may be true they draw from the same base of customers, like say Wal-Mart and Target do, but they still compete for our dollars and support. The strongest most competitive will survive. The others? Well they go away. Sept/Oct are big months due to weather and other hunting related issues, and all the KC'S know that.
