If your life depended on treeing a coon.....

I only hunted with Prarie Fork Duke once, but he looked really good that night.

I had another serious competition hunter, that did hunt with Duke a lot, tell me, "If my life depended on treeing a coon when the leads un-snapped, I would want Duke to be the dog at the end of the leash. If its a bad night you are gonna walk a long ways, but he will tree a coon."

Duke was out of Jet IV and Smiths night time Joy (pretty sure on that).

your right on the nitetime joy, kevin. i believe she was ole horn blower x jet 2 female. duke was a real nice coondog, i didn't get to hunt with him until he had some age on him( he was 9 ) but he still had plenty of go and loved to compete. hunting by himself he was pretty open on track, but turn him loose with another dog and he got pretty tight.

Prairie Fork Duke?....... Yeah I may be a little kennel blind with my "Reaf" dog I got here. (goes back to Duke). I got Reaf's Momma from Harry T. as a pup. If you turn him loose, you will not see him again till he is treed............ as close to Jet 4 you can get the better IMO.............. Jon

there were several out of that litter that made nice dogs

I had one here that ended up being named Quail Creek Lady and won high scoring GrNite Bluetick at Autumn Oaks the following year. Rick Meyer had another that was a nice dog. Can't remember his name right off. Pistol Pete maybe? not sure...
good cross...stay put PRESSURE tree dogs!

Rick's was Pistol Pete. There were like 6 or 7 nt's and Gr nt's in that litter...and they started running and treeing really young.

Yeah, I think Duke may have been one of the most "under bred to" studs out there. He was out of a super solid high percentage litter....had all the drive and tree power you could ask for...and had a real live coon when you got there.

Quail Creek Jet was also a dog that made a lot of dogs look clueless. I saw him tree a lot of coon that other dogs couldnt smell...track or tree. Pleasure hunting and in competition.

That sounds like a great cross! Be interested in how that turns out. I was just thinking about the Missouri Blue Rock dog. Never hunted with or even saw the dog, but many whose opinions I respect sure thought he was awesome.

I noticed the other day while digging through pedgrees that Comb's smokey river jack comes up a lot in several of the top dogs today. (smokey river x Jet) I was thinking he was in Rocks, Quail Creek Jets, and some of Cory Mailes stuff....all I can remember at this point.

Pretty sure my first coonhound Jake went back to Jack through Grover II or Grovers Pete, or smokey river sugar. Jake was the kind of treedog where you could drive away from the tree go to town get something to eat drive back and he would still be there(which I did a few times to impress people :-)

I just wondered if Jack was an overlooked hound responsible for the success of a lot of the modern day stuff.

it's intresting to see dogs that weren't famous or heavly used studs that show up in ped.'s of dogs that became famous. example is frank erwins mighty blue magnum. magnum was a really nice coondog that wasn't a world famous stud, but if you flip through the hall of fame dogs in the blue book you will find him in two hall of fame ped.

The one I had out of IV and Joy could have been more accurate, but a better pressure tree dog never lived. Shot a coon out to a dog split about 10 steps from her and she never missed a bark. I honestly think you could have run a pack of fox dogs out by her and she would have never knew they existed. The Jet IV dogs that I hunted with were all pressure tree dogs.

I know that for years Ed said that Bess was the best he had ever hunted. Todd Kellem also said that she was the hound that all hounds should be measured against.

BTW Cuda sure has a nice set of papers. Has he thrown many pups?

After I sold my Bess II to a friend, Brian Hector, he took her hunting with a pretty good walker dog one night. They split on 14 coon that night and they shot the walkerdogs coon out 1st and then went and shot Bess' coon out to her.

At 14 weeks when I was working her litter on the net she would open on the scent first(layed drag) and would be the first pup on the tree. What impressed me most was that after the pups had treed awhile I would get the net out of the tree for them to chase and she would refuse to quit treeing. All of the other pups would be going nuts chasing the net like it was a coon and she would be locked on the tree, and if she looked over at them she would just tree harder. She was also very accurate.

north Louisiana

I sold Lady to Rick Meyer and Henry Miller...they lived in northern Missouri...she had two firsts on her when I sold her....part of the purchase price was a pup out of GrNiteCh Northern Blue Curley and GrNiteCh Guse's Southern Blue Mae....that pup was sure going to be something special and I lost her. I bought my first tracking system because of her and lost her before the tracker got shipped to me. She was 10 months old and had a male dog mouth and was a real tree dog.

The Jet IV stuff was for real.

I had forgotten about that cross. Rick had told me about several out of that cross that were great pups. I live in NW MO and Henry lived way down in the SE part. Rick is about dead center in the middle of the state.

My trip to Henry's place was my first experience with ozark driving. The eight miles of gravel road to his house took me about 45 minutes and a lot of the highways were about 30 mph tops....narrow and curvy.
