-- How Much Do You Feed (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928270313)

Ultra calls for something like 4-5 cups for the dogs I hunt, but apparently that's to ensure they cover all bases and metabolisms. You can back down from there, as I did, and see what your dog really requires. In my case, I cut it in half.

If you feed more than your dog's metabolism requires, they will either build fat, or simply recycle it into your kennel. In other words, not only did I save money by cutting back on the feed, I also cut down on the need to clean the kennel!

And I still get ribbed by my friends for having dogs on the heavy side...

sportmix is a ******** food that is full of corn, yes extreme is expensive but thats why i feed 2 cups and not 5 cups. i wish my dogs could have cheap food and look good if the could i would go back to purina dog chow. its as good as any of the cheap food

I have fed Ultra, Diamond EA, and Sportmix. I really liked the Ultra. Great feed. Dogs stayed in good shape with good muscle tone, minimal clean up, and the amount necessary to keep them up was WAY less than the amount recommended by the manufacturer. My dealer stopped carrying it.

Fed Diamond EA for awhile. Amount of feed required to keep dogs up was unbelievably small. Hunting 5 and 6 nights a week not much more than a cup if that much. Great muscle tone....they were ripped.....never slow down. Many days i would squirrel hunt through the day and go straight into the night coon hunting. Clean up was even less than Ultra. The recalls and price made me change.

I am currently feeding Sportmix. It is a feed with it's good points. Dogs like it. It makes their coats shine. Feed Sportmix for a couple of months and there will be a noticeable difference in the appearance of your dogs. However, there are some negatives to Sportmix. Sportmix made my dogs fat. No where near the obvious muscle mass. My dogs have struggled in hot weather with the Sportmix. They are fine for a couple of hours and then seem to shutdown. As for clean up...I got a bigger shovel and it has done my yard good.

Mine will be back solid on EA before our season starts.

I have 14 puppys that are 12 weeks old and their eating about 11 pounds per day ..

I just started feeding some of the Diamond 24 20. So far the dogs look healthier and less and easier clean up. I'd say I'm feeding about 2 1/2 to 3 cups per dog and I'm going to have to cut some of them back. Anyone else feeding this feed?

Actually I measured it out and half a coffe can equals out to out about 4 1/2cups which I'd what they recommend for their weight but right. Now iam the best bang for the buck , can't afford higher feed being laid off

i also feed a half coffee can per day. Showtime in the black bag. that is the small 13 ounce can. and i think I'm either gonna have to cut back on the feed or hunt a little more because they sure are fat.

Posted by down and out on 09-17-2012 10:06 PM:

Is it really more exspensive if your feeding a third to half as much.

That is a good picture. What do you do with so many dogs running loose? That is cool.

If you guys are referring to the Diamond brand Extreme Athlete, it's $35 for a 40 lb. bag, compared to $25 for a 50 lb. bag of Ultra, so it better be good!

The same with Pro Plan and Native... I'm looking for a quality dog food, where the manufacturer doesn't charge an arm and a leg for the quality.

I didn't find any Victory dealers in the state, but there is a Sportmix dealer nearby. Anyone have any other experience with Sportmix?

Thanks for all the ideas and feedback!
Dave

i feed sport mix 24-20 2 er 3 cups a day and dogs gettin hunted every nite also not much clean up clean healthy coats.

not at all

One red solo cup of black gold wich equals about two measuring cups

Posted by garminguru on 09-18-2012 12:52 AM:

The cup thing is funny. I asked a guy how much he was feeding of his crappy dog food and he said a 1.5 cups. Turned out, the "cup" he was using would hold about 30 ounces of liquid. That is not a cup!
If your container will hold 8 ounces of liquid that is one cup.
I feed 1.5 cups of Diamond EA to one dog and 1.5 cups of Diamond Lamb and Rice to another dog each day and they do great.

Technicly speacking , a cup is 8 ounces. 2 cups is a pint. "A Pint is a Pound the World Around".

If you were in prison, would your belly rather have 1.5 cups or 2.5 cups per day?

Feed the cheap stuff then you'll be able to sleep better at night.

Diamond extreme athlete

I feed 2.5 measuring cups a day to my 70# male when I'm hunting him 5-6 nights a week. Been feeding him 1.75-2 lately with my new work schedule. Never had anybody wonder if he was getting fed plenty!

I sleep fine and so do my dogs. No hunger pangs on either of us. I'm just glad I got big enough ground pens that i don't have to be a turd counter....and the dogs have to pay for that. right now I am feeding Showtime 27-20 . it's cheap considering the protein and fat content you get. It has corn in it and my dogs do OK on corn. If they could not I might have to think of culling FIFI. I would not feed dogs I had to feed Lobster and Caviar. But to each his own. 20 years ago a 20-10 was good feed and it had soybean meal in it. Let me ask you? What are you going to do when they come up with a bolus the size of the last joint on your little finger that has a complete balanced nutrition for your dog? The dog putes dust because there is absolutely no waste? Would you hop on it?

l.lyle I agree with you, 2 cups a day dont seem like enough.

LOL! You must have been around for awhile too. I used to feed the " most potent"feed till i noticed the dogs were eating the pine limbs and cones that fell in the pen just to put something in their belly. That reminded me of when I was a kid and daddy was short on hay. We would feed the cows cottonseed meal and salt, HIGH PRO and turn them in the swamp of cutover timber. They would clean up the sprouts and briars as good or bad as goats.

Maybe we will end up buying this wonderfull feed and supplementing the dog's belly with cedar shavings or oatstraw from the dogbox bedding. LOL.

If you ever catch them eating their own crap ? would you give it a second thought? OR NOT? or is it ? Lest turds to scoop is alls I's after. LOL
