How Much Do You Feed

Alright, I know there's a ton of different dog food threads on here, but this one is a bit different. My question is how much are you feeding and of what brand?

I've fed Purina, Joy, Diamond, Ole Roy and as of late, Ultra. Historically I've fed my average coon hound right at 2 measured scoops, which equates to 4-5 cups. But when I started feeding Ultra, I was told that I could get away with 2 to 2-1/2 cups per day. Not scoops, cups! And I recall telling Larry that I fed a couple large hounds that were getting hunted pretty hard, and he told me that on Ultra, I could feed more, but if I just fed 2 cups the dogs metabolism would adjust and they would be just fine.

Now... I've been feeding Ultra for several years, feeding pups, an older 75 lb. male and a high strung 60 lb. young female. And with 26/18, 2 to 2-1/2 cups per day (not twice) is plenty. In fact, if I back off on hunting them, they will get fat.

So... am I writing this thread as an ad for Ultra? Not exactly. My problem is that I've moved to Wisconsin (Oconomowoc area) and it looks like the closest Ultra dealer is at least 2 hours away. So I may have to change brands, and I'm hoping that someone else has had as much luck with another brand, as I have had with Ultra. Bottom line, dog food and gas is getting expensive, and I don't want to have to go back to feeding a 40-50 lb. bag every 2-3 weeks! A fifty pound bag of Ultra, feeding 2 cups a day to two dogs, lasts me over a month.

Has anyone else had luck with another dog food brand? Again, I'm not asking what you think is good or what your dogs do fine, on. As I've had luck with many brands. But, I've never fed so little, with such great results, as Ultra.

David Schmidt

i fed pride chicken n rice 21/17 for along time , but it went up to $ 25 bucks a bag , so i switched this time and got the diamond in the blue n yellow bag for $ 20 a bag at tractor supply , i know theyeve had alot recalls but i talk with the manager and he says they never purchased feed from any of the recall plants , so far hounds are eating it really well and seem to like it better ? first three ingrediants are the same as they where with pride . if you go with a diamond feed id check where the buyer got it from and make sure there where no recall problems . all in all ive had great luck with pride just getting this diamond closer to the house and saving alittle in the wallet ,

I was feeding 3 cups to a 70LBS dog getting hunted 26/18 Sportmix. I started feeding Victory 26/18 had to cut back to 2 1/2 cups. Look to see how close a Victory dog food dealer is.

Pro Plan is great, not cheap though. I feed 2 60lb dogs 2 cups a day and it last for about 7 wks. Sometimes feed an extra half or whole cup if hunting hard. Best part very little waste.

I feed a couple different Purina feeds and I have found that with pretty much any Purina feed I can feed the recommended amount or a little less.

When I was feeding Pro Plan Performance a couple years ago I could feed 2 to 2 1/4 cups a day and keep healthy weight on a female I was hunting 5 nights a week.

Native level 4 , Pro Plan Performance , Daimond Extreme Athelete, The native is the best , just 2 8oz cups a day and if you hunt them at night you dont have to clean kennels , pro plan is the same way , but the DEA I have not fed personally but everybody loves it , these feeds are not cheap but you feed less and your dog (s) are getting a top quality feed,

When I say a "cup" I mean a measured cup. The medium size plastic or glass kitchen "measuring cups", are usually 2 to 2-1/2 measured cups if you fill to the top.

If you guys are referring to the Diamond brand Extreme Athlete, it's $35 for a 40 lb. bag, compared to $25 for a 50 lb. bag of Ultra, so it better be good!

The same with Pro Plan and Native... I'm looking for a quality dog food, where the manufacturer doesn't charge an arm and a leg for the quality.

I didn't find any Victory dealers in the state, but there is a Sportmix dealer nearby. Anyone have any other experience with Sportmix?

Thanks for all the ideas and feedback!
Dave

When I say a cup I mean one cup. The glass I feed with holds 4 cups and is marked on the side for 1,2,3, and 4. I feed each dog exactly as labeled on the bag per weight or a little less.

The only time I feed more is with pups and I tend to give them about a cup or so extra per pup as they tend to spill and waste some feed and I want to make sure they are getting all the vitamins and nutrition they need to fully develop.
