I have a young dog ready for Nov.15th,shoot every coon they tree but not more than one out of tree, this time of year would not even think about shooting a coon. My son, who is 11 and I skin every one, don,t get much out of them but it is something we enjoy to do. My wife said she would try to bake a couple young ones for us, this is the first year she has said that but I still think there is enough deer in the woods to eat, I cut my first tooth chewing on a deer and LORD willing will loose my last tooth on the same. I will proubly knock a coon or two out for dogs after the kitten come out and always knock first one out a pup trees, that always fires them up, if you don,t keep the population under controll, the LORD, not mother nature which is just another name someone made up who does,nt want to believe there is a GOD, has other ways to keep the population under controll, which is a lot harder on them than we would be.

Anyone who thinks shooting coon (during season) accordingly to population is a bad thing, is neutering this sport.

i like knowing that i have coon to run and tree in my spots. i think this season i started hunting Middle of Jan and with limited hunting tree 45 or so coon. I shot out 7 total. I have a young do that is running and treeing good and i only gave her 4 of those. If you got to shoot every coon out to your dog then you need to look at what your hunting a little closer. i used to shoot every coon i treed when i was younger and the fur prices were much better back in the 80's. but i started having trouble getting a good track and dogs were having to go deeper and deeper. I have really hurt the coon population and it took several yrs to recover. My dogs perform just as good with just a few coons being knocked out as they do shooting lots to them. We need to conserve coon populations just the same as deer hunters and turkey hunters conserve their game of choice.

I don't run up big numbers of coon killed per year, but I do enjoy seeing them young dogs with fur in they're mouths regardless of the time of year.

I've never heard of anyone ruining a dog by giving it a few coon.

Not going to be ashamed of knocking out a few coon here and there.

Around here a farmer can put out poison and kill 100's of coon, opossum, birds of prey and anything else it comes in contact with.

However, If I am working a young dog and give it 1 out of the 3 coons it treed that night, I am considered a criminal.

i agree. we killed a lot of coon this year and are still hunting all the same spots and tree 3 or 4 an hour no problem.

It's hard not to knock them out when you're training a puppy but this time of the year they are breeding so leave'em up I say. Just pet'em up really good.
